Preface: I played RS2 up until just before EOC came into effect, decided to call it quits at that point because the direction Runescape was taking wasn't what i personally wanted from the game. I have kept a quiet eye on RS since then and I have been enjoying OSRS for a few months now.
Sailing has immense potential, in my opinion. However, I have concerns.
The basic concept is great, and any quibbles over the minutia of the skill (level reqs etc) are honestly not a big deal for me. I am worried about the precedents that might be set by some of the proposals (in some cases have already been set).
Mostly, it's the apparently high amount of borrowed or rebranded RS3 content, in the form of things like the mechanics of the new top-tier gem when compared to Hydrix, dungeoneering prayers, resource dungeons by a different name.
I realise there are only so many ways to reinvent the wheel, but i just feel that lifting things directly, or making only very slight changes, somewhat defeats the point of trying to keep RS3 and OSRS as distinct entities, rather than just different flavours of the same entity.
The whole skill feels very dungeoneering-inspired, which is not neccesarily a bad thing. I liked dungeoneering itself, and the plans to make Sailing not so minigame-eqsue are very welcome. But precedents set now about the direction of updates, and what is acceptable to pull from RS3 and what is not, concern me greatly.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I like OSRS, because it is OSRS. It doesn't need to be a carbon copy of RS3 with flat textures. All I have seen so far suggests that I am not alone in feeling this, players and developers alike, but I think this more than anything needs to be handled delicately.
