I do want this new skill but I don't like some of the stuff I read about it.

at first I was excited but I keep reading
port phantasmy
burg de rott
tyras port
the desert
well those are places I don't like going
and hoped once I was done questing that I would never have to go back lol

they are more difficult to get too and not places I wanna spend my time
i was thinking we would create new places to train in
not the same places
kind of let down about that

the same about planks
I keep hearing
maple
yew
magic
teak etc

well that's all fine but I was thinking there were gonna be NEW things
not just using the same tired items again

and it does sound a lot like a construction skill
when I build boats am I gonna get construction xp too?

what about new trees
idk maybe
redwood
or cherrywood
or other fruit trees
which also open up new food
ways to survive if you run outta food exploring
then use the wood for a beautiful ship

idk just thinking aloud

get inventive
how about a beautiful blue sapphire hull or cannon.
things we don't use much or brand NEW resources

i don't wanna do or use the same tired old things ..just in a different place..

if your gonna do a new skill
then do a NEW skill
not always oak , maple,yew, magic..blah blah

ships could be
idk
redwood, cherry or make some new wood up

another interesting idea could be to allow each person to build a designer boat
and paint it as we choose from a palate of colors
maybe unlocking more choices as we level up

example
if you want your boat in gold or silver
you might have to reach a certain level

but if each person can paint there boat then they wont all look alike
yours might be blue and white
marys might be pink purple and yellow
bob might paint his red and black

it would make a much more interesting skill

and for gods sake
it would be cool if we could actually sit down or something lol

Random location possibilities.

Color Code Reference.

Quest Possibility

Slayer Possibility

*
*
Cyclops island. Bigger stronger cyclops than that of warriors guild.

*
*
Medusa's island. Gargoyles, Basilisk a different stronger variation? <- Poison?

Underwater Mountain Range- Reference Dragons of the Lost Sea . Civilized Dragons, Lost city of the DragonKin taken over by more tamed dragons ( Thzaar but with dragons and a Castle). RFD required for breathing apparatus. Magical? No need for breathing apparatus after a certain point. Variety of different dragons; Sea Dragons, Emerald Dragons, ect... The Castle could have a wide range of skills you could do.

Examples

Treasure Room- thieving?minigame?
Herb Patch- Dragons get sick they need to get medicine somehow.
Core Mining- Rich abundance of material, Resource Arena Payment but more expensive (maybe) depending of resources.
Repairing the castle- Construction, Crafting.
Getting rid of vermin- Hunter, Magical version of chinchompa?
New things to cook and fish? Seahorse, octopus, ect..
Learn the secrets of their bloodline,- OSRS RC Blood Runes

More to come if you want

I support this skill 100% but I feel it has a long way to go.

TRAINING

The boat making being like farming is okay, but it would be cool if you could actually stay and help build parts of the boat yourself (to speed up the time and/or train related skills).

NEW RESOURCES

I am in total agreement with the idea of using new planks for ship building. One thing I am sure was mentioned but I really didn't come across when i was combing the thread is the idea of using sailing to not just find new islands but to find new resources.
No I don't mean like more yew trees or rune ore (which is fine) but actual NEW resources that are unique to sailing. For upgrading and creating more powerful/unique boats.

BOATS THEMSELVES

Speaking of boats it would be nice to be able to take a ragtag boat and be able to continually upgrade it so that it becomes a legendary boat. They could keep a record how many trips its taken, how far its traveled, how many battles its been in, etc. It would be cool if boats could be sunk if they were not repaired enough after a voyage.

SELLING/TRADING PLAYER MARKET

Making boats able to have individual names and even, going back to a Trading Post style market, making boats sellable/trabable to other players so that players just cant find the resources they need for their boat can still buy a boat that suits them.

Creating endless possible combinations for how boats could be built is another thing that would really make sailing and boat building stand out. Not just having "the best" items for a boat but having the ability to make unique combination of cannons and rare items to create a legendary boat (found from sailing and/or other things).

Sure there are many other things that I could add but this is what popped into my head. Just some ideas to consider. I am sure, no matter what, Sailing will become a keystone in OSRS.

SKILL INCORPORATION

Sailing could be a way to connect all those hard trained skills together. Sure you have smith/crafting/construction for boat building, but what about...

-Agility for exploring
-Fishing/Cooking on the sea
-Slayer islands or slayer monsters out at sea
-Farming patches on new islands
-The ability to store resources on your ship from mining/woodcutting and/or more from the islands you have explored
-Adding new prayers that apply to sailing
-Endless possibilities for how sailing could take not just one or two of the skills we have worked so hard to train but most if not all of them into account when sailing the great blue.

RECRUITING

Recruit a crew of NPC's to help you sail the Seven Seas (sorry it just rhymed too well).

FINAL THOUGHTS

Honestly, sailing I truly believe, if done well, could be the corner stone to opening up a whole new way to play Oldschool Runescape WITHOUT ruining the greatness that it is now. I truly hope you (JAGEX) consider how much this will effect the game and ONLY release it when the skill is truly ready to be released. However I do have high hopes for this new skill and can only wait in anticipation for what is to come.

I'm sort of aligned with Trancendent's post on page 24.

I think shipbuilding should just be an extension of or new content for construction that is not required but maybe provides some optional benefit or training method to a sailing or exploring skill, or maybe even just provides a new mode of transportation.

I like the idea of underwater caverns, mainly because of the LOOT . But I did not like Dungeoneering as a skill and this seems like it could be too close that and being a minigame.

All in all, as is, I don't see any of this under one umbrella of a skill yet, but rather several separate enhancements to existing skills and content.

I still see summoning as the next best skill to add to the game, and I know jagex doesn't want to change the combat system at all, but all I really want out of it is a beast of burden and that wouldn't need to change combat at all.

If sailing is gonna become a skill please do not make any type of training method of sailing above 45k-50k, and the highest i'd be ok with at the very very max would be 60k xp.. I want this to be an actual fun skill that i can actually enjoy and for as long as i could, and not some overpowered fast garbage.. for 45k xp an hr is a fair amount of exp in my opinion it allows you to get to know the skill and enjoy it a fair amount of times.. i am someone who enjoys skilling and i dont want that to be ruined just because you guys at jagex think someone would enjoy fast exp, when the exact opposite is true.. This is old school the people who enjoy skilling really want a long and long, hard, and an especially a challenging type of skill that in no way is afkable at all, or if afkable at all is to be the extreme extreme minimum.. A skill is not enjoyable if it does not require some kind of skill to it or some kind of challenge. If a skill is fast easy and not challenging in anyway then what would the point to bringing a skill to the game be..

Make a skill like mining, runecrafting, things that are hard and slow.. I say 30k is fair and i say 45k xp an hr is even more then fair especially because this could sound like a very fun interesting skill to do, if thats true then people really wouldnt be even thinking of the xp rate or bothered by how slow it is.... Slow hard and challenging skills is just what skillers enjoy otherwise if they dont they're not really a skiller themselves who plays the game to skill and enjoy skilling in general.. Also besides if i dont find any of it challenging or hard to lv up and train a skill its not really a skill and its not fun and im sure most people would agree with me at least that are skillers that skill to play the game and play the game to skill because it is their passion and love to skill on runescape..
