3. No it will not make it more expensive, and here is why. There's a thing called the sawmill where you go and get your planks. So, for making this simple and clear, I'll use mahogany planks. You can get mahogany planks from some monsters, but the main source is people chopping down mahogany logs, or getting them from monsters, and selling them on g.e. The players who buy the mahogany logs grab their wad of cash and go to the sawmill. I believe mahogany logs cost 1250 to be made into mahogany planks. So, if the logs cost 250, and the planks cost 1250 to make, then the total cost is 1500 coins. That is the set, and firm price that will never change. Of cours
And what I am saying is that this will never fly with 75% of the player-base needed to pass the poll. I don't feel people want another skill that costs over 100mil to to master at non-garbage XP rates. We need some confirmation from the mods about how this will work. We want this to pass the poll, remember?
Agreed, I do want this to pass, but I thought I would just point out why the plank prices would not become expensive at all. Also, I said this on page 2 (I think page 2) that I want to use existing trees like willow, maple, etc for the new planks.
So like willow, maple, yew, magic planks specifically just for sailing.
Although, I really do hate the idea that they want turn PART of this skill into tell the workers build me a ship, leave and come back X minutes later. I don't really think that's adventurous, which the mods themselves said was basically the point of the skill.

Either way, it's not going to pass a poll if getting 99 at non-garbage XP rates costs over 100mil. A lot of people are already apprehensive about the skill, and this just signs the skill's death warrant.
Are there any Jmods reading this thread? Can you at least confirm or deny that mastering this skill will have decent experience rates and be affordable by more than just people like me?
Well you can't expect everything to be handed to people. Getting 99 in this skill sounds like it will be quite the achievement. I was active on last dev blog with reading it and the replies as well now on this dev blog, and so far I see VERY FEW negative feedback compared to the last one. Of course not many people have been able to read it yet, but I think as Jagex gives out more information, more people seem to sway to they will vote yes. We will see. But I think it's a really cool idea and hope it passes.
Actually they kind of did just hand 99's out to us. It's called afk guthans, you just leave your account in nightmare zone for 6 hours, and get free exp! Anyways, I do agree this is a really cool idea, they just need to change a lot of things before the next dev blog.

If you re-read what I said, I said if they made a new type of log/plank that doesn't already exist, then it will be more expensive. If you use what we have, of course people will manipulate the price for a bit, and then average back out.
If Sailing introduces the Sawmill Operator opening up the Lumber Yard to having the trees you chop made into raw lumber at a substantially cheaper rate than planks, manipulating the prices long-term would be impossible. This is my suggestion.
I like the idea of implementing a new type of material to be used for sailing such as new trees/planks/ores/bars/crafting material...but will people want the implementation of all that? It doesn't seem like sailing just came out of nowhere in their head. From the looks of it, it looks like they kept this idea under the radar and thought it out and now want us to help improve it. They didn't just come out and say 'hey, we want to do a skill like sailing and we just want to know how you want it to be'.... definitely some thought was put in to it.
I'm for just using what we have in game already with making willows/maples/yews/magics in to planks as well.

I'm totally against splashing and NMZ, it takes away the integrity of the game. However, it is just part of the mechanics that are in play and wasn't the intention of it. Can easily be fixed, but the community won't pass that for some reason.
I see a lot of people complaining about planks. Why not let us salvage some planks when we sink other ships and/or get planks and other resources as rewards for helping defend outposts and the like?
Get 99 Sailing the slow way -> Get free planks for construction
or
Get 99 Sailing the fast way -> Pay a ******** for planks and get no free planks for construction.

Good thing that is only part of the way to get experience. And although they said it will be a constant xp rate, they didn't clarify that it will be the best experience rate and I am sure Jagex is smart enough to not make it the best rate otherwise it would kill the skill. I think if they changed the name away from sailing, then it would all feel more fitting. Sailing is just a nostalgia name because it was around since 2008 or even before that. I think it should be Navigation/Exploration because it would fit everything you will be doing perfectly in to that name. Not only will you get experience in sailing from building ships, etc. but you will also get some experience toward construction, crafting, and smithing as well and hopefully not enough to make it a suitable training method for those 3 skills and get people from doing them the main way.

If you do that, then you devalue the achievement getting 99 Construction. What is wrong with the game is expecting things to be handed to them in a cheap or free fashion. We have until next year to stock up on planks/logs or whatever.
Interesting training methods however I cannot see what the basic skill idea behind them is. Lets look at Hunter as an example:
- I can track kebbits.
- I can tease grahhks.
- I can catch butterflies.
These doesn't make hunter a skill. The skill behind hunter is "The ability to capture and kill animals".
Sailing (or any skill added to the game) requires a basic concept behind it, not just a series of content. Here you have suggested;
- Player owned ports & ships.
- An expansion to the ship transportation network.
- Randomly generated sea adventures.
All of this can be fun and implemented without any need for a new skill.
Where is the 1 line explanation of the skill? and How could you add another minigame or training methods relating to the skill.
I like the ideas you have given but you clearly haven't thought out what makes a skill, you have gone to the name "sailing" because it is popular & you've designed content around the idea of sailing however it doesn't have any of the key features that a skill requires.
If you are to design a skill that could have sailing inside of it then that would be perfect but for now you've just approached creating a new skill from the wrong direction.
