A whole lot going on here. I think that it should be addressed that this is a Developer Blog, NOT something that is definitely happening yet. more of a proposal of things that COULD happen. "beginning of our discussions of sailing". If the mass truely doesnt want it, it won't happen.
Firstly, i think the addition of a new skill should also be encompassed by a new range of items that come forth with it. otherwise, it will just be like thieving, in the aspect that you do it just to claim more items that are already in the game. The same goes for enemies.
Also, it has a huge potential to actually open up the game vastly more than what it is now. currently any expansion that happens is usually in places where the map just ends. Hence the introduction of Zeah being a totally seperate entity.
Secondly, with the expansion of such a huge potential area is how it will be navigated. will it be a missions based thing; like being given a chart in which i must plot my own route to succeed in the objective? This seems like the only logical conclusion, as an open world free roam would be very difficult to justify experience. Like being given experience in strength for walking from lumby to ardougne. hard to quantify.
I will give some credit to people saying it sounds like a mini-game rather than a skill, because if the skill were to be like it is above ( Mission based objective with randomized paths). but i think where the variety will come from will be the missions that you get coming from specific port owners**** the rimmington port will give low level 1-20 missions. Where as the Tyras camp port might give 70-80 missions.
