this reminds me of the olaf's quest where you get the parchment reading this:

"Alas, we are lost. Our ship has been smashed against the rocks and we are floundering. Sven has ordered us to make for the hidden caves, but I do not think we will make it alive. The other ships have already gone down, along with the greater share of that cursed treasure. I commend my soul to the gods.-Ulfric Longbeard"

so, if there will be anything sailing related, will this be part of it?

I like the idea of this. It sounds very similar to Dungeoneering, which is something I liked in the new game, but with a more old-school environment and goal - less flashy and more plausible.

It seems like the sort of thing people can play if they want and not play if they don't, so I don't see how it ruins the old school feel. It doesn't invade the rest of the game and is a nice addition for anyone looking for a new skill.

The only major thing is that I think the PvP element should either be removed or be made optional. There can be incentives for people to do PvP, but I play for skills and quests, not for competition, and I would rather have a choice between PvP and non-PvP.

Otherwise, I'm not sure if this is already the plan, but I would like if players could do some of the building and repairwork. As an example, maybe you have to use construction to fix a hole in the ship or repair the mast, or you need crafting to fix the rigging or sail. Players with lower skill levels could hire the crew to do the repairwork.

And as a side note, what sort of ships would we be building? It would be really cool to build viking ships in Relleka. Maybe we could make viking war ships for just PvP or merchant ships for just skills.

Hope we get some more info on what the possible training methods will be before release, I think it would be nice if the skill had a buyable component to it, for a nice goldsink and then a slower method that makes money. playing rs since 1976, 40 year vet cape soon

Sailing sounds like an interesting skill, but can Jagex introduce any new skill without messing up the fundamental structure of the game. Any new skill should not overly effect the levelling
process of any of the earlier skills. Skills like Dung and Summoning that introduce powerful weapons and familiars that change the core of the game, should not be added to Old School.
I'm maxed on RS3(cept for Div), and i buy mems to play Old School. When Old School ceases to be Old School, i will be gone from RS for good.

100% Full support! I really like the idea and the concept of this new skill, just to imagine new areas to explore, new monsters, new items, its just amazing :D . Definitely something new to Oldschool Runescape! Skills and other content that alredy exists on runescape 3 its not worth it, and thats why i totally with this updade. Im going to look forward to the voting pool! ;)

I'm really quite saddened at the amount of negativity from the community over this blog..

I think this sounds like an amazing addition to Old School, ties in perfectly with the upcoming Zeah continent, and can be used toward filling in holes where there is currently dead content.

For those saying this is taking away from the "old school" feel because it wasn't around in 07, you must have forgotten that part of that "feel" was looking forward to new and exciting content such as this. Preparing yourself for the unknown, unexplored additions to the game and actually going on adventures in this "Adventure MMO". Sailing actually seems like a perfect fit into what Runescape is.. An adventure!

Jagex also has a chance to take this game in a separate direction from RS3 and redo any mistakes they made in the past. Instead of the same quests and skills that are in the main game, here is where we can begin to define this game as more than just an older version of Runescape, while still keeping the "old school" graphics and systems in tact. It is called "Old School Runescape" not "07 Scape"

I just wanted to say at first glance I was super excited when I read this blog and wanted to commend Jagex amidst the sea of negativity. We don't even know that much about it and so many people are quick to jump the gun.. Those arguing against it should know that there are still players out there who enjoy the game for the excitement and adventure, and not just the exp rates and efficiency. Hopefully players and mods can collaborate, and we can take the Sailing outline that they have given us here and build a new exciting chapter for Old School Runescape together!

If by chance this skill is passed in the polls and becomes a real addition to the OSRS
can we please make it to where PVP is toggle-able? (I don't know if that's a word) but to be able to choose whether or not if other ships can attack you if you are just wanting to explore the oceans and train the skill and have no interest in hand on hand combat?..

and make it a cool down like the home teleport that you cant turn on/off PVP mode for 30 minutes so people don't abuse it as a "friendly ship" then all of a sudden they switch to "enemy ship" or something..

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Also with the max cape in OSRS. I know you guys are recently releasing the max cape back into the game and then a few months later possibly adding a new skill,

for a new development blog possibly adding the max cape and every time there's a new skill to add an addition to the max cape like an untrimmed and trimmed skill cape but with fabrics on the cape or something..

so when someone achieves the max cape its not completely taken away and they have to devote all of their time to a new skill just to get back what they already spent many months and years to achieve..
