I'm really quite saddened at the amount of negativity from the community over this blog..

I think this sounds like an amazing addition to Old School, ties in perfectly with the upcoming Zeah continent, and can be used toward filling in holes where there is currently dead content.

For those saying this is taking away from the "old school" feel because it wasn't around in 07, you must have forgotten that part of that "feel" was looking forward to new and exciting content such as this. Preparing yourself for the unknown, unexplored additions to the game and actually going on adventures in this "Adventure MMO". Sailing actually seems like a perfect fit into what Runescape is.. An adventure!

Jagex also has a chance to take this game in a separate direction from RS3 and redo any mistakes they made in the past. Instead of the same quests and skills that are in the main game, here is where we can begin to define this game as more than just an older version of Runescape, while still keeping the "old school" graphics and systems in tact. It is called "Old School Runescape" not "07 Scape"

I just wanted to say at first glance I was super excited when I read this blog and wanted to commend Jagex amidst the sea of negativity. We don't even know that much about it and so many people are quick to jump the gun.. Those arguing against it should know that there are still players out there who enjoy the game for the excitement and adventure, and not just the exp rates and efficiency. Hopefully players and mods can collaborate, and we can take the Sailing outline that they have given us here and build a new exciting chapter for Old School Runescape together!

Sorry for the wall of text but this is a couple ideas I had on the skill.

I hope that sailing is a skill that has a travelling system where you have to actively steer and control the boat. For larger vessels they would have to have a couple of friends rowing or something along those lines. If you could make a grid system of like 9x9 squares where each has a chance of a randomly generated island and/or encounter with some sort of enemy. With each of these islands there should be a chance of a randomly generate mini-dungeon to spawn. With the spawn of the mini-dungeon there should be another chance of there being a boss with good rewards such as xp/good profit items.

It'd give a true sense of adventure and maybe with higher levels you gain access to certain bosses and boats. For example you could incorporate construction into the creation of boats but have a certain level requirement to sail with sailing. Then you could make it so that the better the boat the bigger it could get and you could make a crew. This would tie in with the new bosses which might scale up so that they can no longer be solo'd so you have to actively seek out help from the community.

I have other ideas on the matter but yeah just some ideas that I think would make OSRS a much more actively enjoyable place.

Randomly generated seas? Sounds like dungeoneering, which was a skill I really didn't like. Yes, I enjoy exploring, but I don't enjoy it if it seems futile. What's the point of exploring randomly generated maps? When I want to explore something, I want to learn about it. What its geography is like, what its inhabitants do... even possibly what quests it has to offer. Randomly generated maps have none of that. Probably going to be a no from me. Even though the prospect of a new skill is great, I'd rather it be one I'm sure I'll enjoy.

I can't see how people can't like this!

Seriously this is the most exiting thing since I started playing this game and got my first iron armor made for me by my cousin.

Going out adventuring, finding random items, just chilling around with a cup of coffee and your new ship enjoying the calmness of the seas in RuneScape.

This is a dream come true, if people can't see how nice a skill this is they lack creative imagination. Seriously, you can build your own freaking ship, this is like dungeoneering and construction on steroids.

Imagine being able to smith your own cannon for your own ship... When you see another ship you gotta load up the cannon, reminds me of Eve Online. If you're a pro sailor you might be able to off a team just by yourself, your cannons and your ship.

You have my vote! This skill will be the resurrection of the nostalgic RuneScape feel.

This is my idea for sailing:

Don't make re-hashed player owned ports because few people actually enjoy them, make it more like dungeoneering wherein we receive a different experience every time we sail, whilst using the resources we gather to improve our ships (like binding gear in dunge).

Content-wise I think you guys will nail it as long as you don't have some over-complicated click intensive crap like construction or POPs.
