That's funny San, i loved playing pop, In the most remote, unexplored areas of sea, sounds like b4 areas you have to work toward, just hopefully i'm wrong & you're right, because who really cares, if i get a vote, won't be for sailing.

PVP of developer blog

Past the dangers of creatures from the deep and heavy waters stands the threat of other players. In the most remote, unexplored areas of sea you can never be sure whether a ship coming towards you will be passing by quietly or coming for your booty.

When heading into dangerous seas you must be equipped to deal with other players trying to take you down and grab what they can. Whether it is a crew of five players or someone completely alone, when you see a ship in the watery wilderness you should be prepared for the fight of your life.

says you can never be sure

Please read that over and think about it real hard.

"In the most remote, unexplored areas of sea" sounds like higher teir exploring to me. Keyword here is "most", so I am pretty sure unless you want to do higher teir sailing, you won't have to do any pvp.

Don't take my word for it, here's what Mod Ronan had to say on twitter (@JagexRonan):

To calm even more concerns ahhhh..

You will not be forced into PvP at all. PvP will be entirely optional and only in clearly defined areas.

I like it, it sounds like it'd be fun! I'm glad that the PvP will be optional.

It sounded like we'd be able to use a swimming tank to go to underwater caves. Maybe the swimming apparatus can start out as basic and be built up to be better so that the swimming gear won't take up as many gear slots if we have to do underwater combat?

I'm not quite sure how it's meant on caves, but I was thinking completely underwater ones and others that you have to swim underwater to get to where it'll lead to dry land like in a hidden or secret place like a hidden cave system.

I don't know if treasure hunting has been talked about or not, but maybe there can be "message in bottles" which give coordinates (like the current clue scrolls but specifically for use in water) in which we fish up sunken treasure or a treasure chest or if we have to go underwater to sort of dig under the sand to uncover sunken treasure.

With sailing to the East it sounds like it'll be a part of the Dig Site excavations too? Will there be underwater excavations as a part of that along with special reward items from gaining points to help with excavations if there are any?

There could be a Sailing Competition Island or area where we can take part in fun events like rowboat races; or sailing courses; using a submersible to find certain fish, crabs, crustaceans, mammals, sea plants or other sea life and the top 3 players to find them win; or games like hide and seek with a squid or other sea animals where you're catching x amount to tag and release them to help oceanographers track them. Something fun and silly but you also gain in sailing by building up the boats used in the competitions or as one of the rewards you get sailing XP for winning if you choose it.

I'd like to see new fish, crustaceans, etc or rare versions to catch, but where it's only available through sailing. They can be used to make special potions from the oils, food, fish bait, wall mounts, or for luring sailing monsters.

Oh, also you can do more jewelry options by finding special seashells that could act how gems are now or just do decorative jewelry that are colored by the color of the shells. The shell colors can be ground up and combined with special items found through sailing to color existing items or weapons maybe.

One question is are we able to die while Sailing and if so how are we able to retrieve our bodies and our boat again?

I like the idea of exploring tho, it'd be nice to find a pretty island with waterfalls with a beautiful beach and a lush nice forest with rare flowers. I can't wait to see what's out there to find! There's a lot of possibilities with Sailing so it's exciting to see what'll happen!

The one thing I worry about tho is that it's going to cause lag which is why I left RS3, so I'm hoping it won't be a memory hog on things.

P.S. The competitions I talked about, if there's something added like that there should be NPC competition to play against if there's no live players around to compete with. Navigating around a course could gain XP, or building the boats for competition can get XP in sailing too or as I said earlier have the Sailing XP as a possible reward in competitions.

Another ideas is that we could also find special NPC's like Sirens, Mermaids, Pirates, or any other type of mythological sea creatures or anything associated with water, that offer special items as rewards in return for helping them with something they need. That could be on it's own or as a part of the "message in a bottle" or clue/treasure hunting rewards. It'd be neat to meet new types of NPC's which have histories or stories that we could help them with, which will help us with our Sailing since we're using our boats to travel from place to place to help them.

So, a hundred pages of mixed reception, with the vast majority of it being mainly negative because:

*some people are too afraid of wetting their underwear (scared) because it's something NEW and their brains can't handle that
*some people are too upset that it's not something that "fits 07 simply because it wasn't there in the real year 2007"
*some people think it's only destined to be an April Fool's joke, when it actually didn't start like that
*some people want rehashes of bad RS3 skills (mainly Dungeoneering is bad, since it would not be anything like RS3 Dung if it were added into OSRS, and I personally hate it. Summoning is better but still doesn't belong in a game about the past of RS)

...or some combination thereof of the above.

I know new skills and stuff are a touchy subject in OSRS, but there is no way that something this ambitious should be shot down just because people can't handle change and progress! I personally feel that Jagex should reconsider their "poll every little feature" stance, because it leads to some seriously entitled-feeling noobs and whiners getting their way, and hinders the progress of the game as a whole.

Speaking of noobs and whiners, I've noticed a good amount of people whining about the Old School GE API when it is fine ! It is there to assist players and fansites alike (especially those that don't bother with that accursed thing OSBuddy).

But I digress...

(I'm sorry that this is harsh, but I won't back down on my stance because of people being stubborn about "no new skills plz" in this game).
Oh, I almost forgot.
Oh, I already forgot.

I would generally advise against it, it changes game dynamics quite a bit. while this could go either way, I would not risk it on this update. (Also, you're trying to recycle dungeoneering content through it =.= I do not approve)
This skill does not fulfill any need in game.

Why Sailing could work:
- Creates alternative and ad hoc method of travel
- Could tie in with construction, even PoH Drydock room, and potentially flatpack ships (lol) or if you want more pirate references, have a guy called Black Beard put them into easy-to-carry bottles for you XD
- PVP could be very interesting given better ships would have serious money and construction supplies put into them.
- Keeps with time period of the game.
- Segways into this new continent nicely.

Why Sailing won't work:
- Creates area access conflicts with so many places.
- Makes Chartering Ships (which serves the same purpose) redundant.
- Sailing would have to be implimented with free movement of the ship, routes would make it tedious.
- If you were to do it right, it would tie in too heavily with construction given building your ship would award you some significant (50%+) fraction of construction exp
- Exp for navigation and exploring sounds a little thin, and mind numbingly boring after level 50.
- Magic is a far better form of transport, no point in making an inferior one.
- Exploring for the purpose of exploring? I smell Dungeoneering. Exploring Runescape is exciting because every place you go actually has relevance in game. This does not.
- For this to work, you'll need to be able to deploy a ship on any body of water, this creates escape issues in the wilderness and a few other problems.

Cautionary notes:
- Don't get too crazy with the new races, just mermaids and ****, keep it medieval fantasy.
