Dev Blog: Old School Website

Please note: Based on player feedback this project is not in development and there are no plans to update the Old School website.
~Mod Lyon & Mod Allstar, Jagex Website Development Team

The Old School website hasn't seen much change for a very long time now. There is room for improvement and Mods Biggs and Allstar have spent some of their personal time making a new, modern design that we would like to run past the community.

The new design

The images above show the new, up-to-date and clean design for the Old School website. There are a large number of advantages that come along with the new design so we want to get your feedback to make sure that the end result is something that the community loves.

Navigation

The navigation on the new website design offers a simple, easy to use navigation bar at the top of the page. This approach makes it very clear where everything a visitor might need is and keeps the navigation across both the Old School and RuneScape websites consistent.

Making sure that the website is easy to navigate is key in turning new visitors into new Old School players.

New structure

The structure of the new design is similar to the existing website with some improved textures and images. It remains reminiscent of the 2007 version of the website while making it clearer for new visitors where to find exactly what it is they are looking for.

The new design makes it very easy for new visitors to know exactly where they need to go to get an account and to play the game, something that is very important for the growth of the game.

Improved performance and reliability

With the new design the Old School website would be getting a bit more than just a makeover. Getting the website up-to-date would mean it would be more reliable and faster. It also builds a better foundation to allow for more updates in the future.

Mobile website

Without a doubt, one of the most valuable advantages to updating the website would be the Old School website becoming mobile compatible. As you can see from the above images, the new design would work well with mobile devices.

Checking for the latest news, or looking someone up on hiscores, or anything else you might want to do with the website, would be a breeze on a mobile device.

Your feedback

We want to know what you think. We're looking out for any and all feedback that we can get on the design to make sure that we can create something that both benefits the game and pleases the Old School community. The more detailed, in-depth feedback we get, the more we can do to improve the design.

It is worth noting that we do not have a date in mind for when this may be released. We realise the importance of the website to both the game and the community and, as such, we appreciate the need for any changes to the website to be done right.

With all the advantages that come with an up-to-date, modern website, it is something that we would love to have. With that said, the community must be happy with it above all else. Be sure to let us know what you think!

Special thanks to both Mod Biggs and Mod Allstar for choosing to put their personal time towards working on this design.

Could we see the clan cup winner statues put on the front page rather than that generic Wizard? They look really awesome and it'd be something we can change yearly depending on winners.

Saw people complaining that the Wizard is irrelevant on the Reddit post.

I personally like everything but the navigation bar. It's too RS3 looking, and I think I would like it better with an older feel. The website looks great overall, and I would want all the extra features included, but with a different look at the place where everyone will be looking.

How's the visiblity of the client download link? It's very important due that browsers are soon dropping the NPAP support (Causing the java can't be ran on the browser or others plugins like silverlight)

I don't see any client download links from images.
