I won't lie....elections are a mess. But I've stood by them for several reasons:
1) It is a general's job to moderate, not act as overlords. To keep that from happening, there needs to be something that keeps generals in line. Something discreet.
2) I want all members of the FC, general and non-generals, to feel like they have a say in what's going on.
3) If a general just isn't doing a good job and needs to be removed, I prefer a discreet way of doing it. Trying to impeach a general would be horribly over dramatic. It would like trying to ban someone and I think we can all agree that is a hellish process to go through, regardless of the outcome. Elections are a more subtle way to move out inactive or inefficient generals.
With that said, before we fully decide on a system, we need to figure out what we want generals for. Do we want them to act as stricter mods that kick people out for inappropriate or overly heated discussion? Or do we want to preserve generals solely for emergency situations, such as troll spammers?
If it's the former, then we need a select group of generals picked with some form of consent from the FC and easy to dismiss without drama. If it's the latter, then I personally think everyone should be a general. And, of course, plenty of people don't want generals at all.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.
