SPOILERS for The Dig Site!

Hello! A rather brief theory this time, but my, am I excited to post this!

First of all, kudos to
AquaMage2459
for putting forward this theory in the form of a suggestion. I merely turned it into a thread and expanded it. ;)

Right, now, we've all wondered at one point or another whatever happened to the prosperous city of Saranthium, built upon the ruins of Senntisten. Suddenly, as the Fourth Age came to a start, it saw a swift and sudden destruction - but at whose hands. I think you'll have figured out what I'm coming at...

In this thread I shall theorise that none other than the fearsome Dragonkin were responsible for Saranthium's demise.

Note: The sources for this were various display cases in Varrock Museum, the quest The Dig Site, the Curse of Arrav and the Book of Zaros.

¤ The Fall of Senntisten ¤

Around 3700ish of the Third Age, a Zamorakian-Saradominist alliance laid siege on one of the last remaining Zarosian hubs: the holy city of Senntisten. Their force was overwhelming and, despite the Mahjarrat Wahisietel's best effort to set them against each other, Senntisten's priest-king Dagroda had to order the city's immediate evacuation. As its inhabitants were either slaughtered or fled elsewhere, the city was taken over by the alliance.

¤ Zamorakian Senntisten ¤

What exactly happened within the ranks of the alliance is unknown - perhaps the Zamorakians outnumbered the Saradominists and forced them to retreat. Either way, eventually Senntisten came under complete Zamorakian rule, and became a city for the Zamorakians like any other.

¤ The Destruction of Senntisten ¤

As you may imagine, the Saradominists weren't too happy about this. Around 3800ish, a Saradominist army attacks Senntisten and the city is completely levelled. On top of its ruins, the Saradominists build a new city: Saranthium.

¤ The End of the Wars ¤

Around 4000ish, Guthix is awakened by Zamorak's annihilation of Forinthry. He banishes the warring gods from Gielinor, takes back the abused Stone of Jas and creates his Edicts to prevent gods from directly interacting with their followers anymore. He returns to sleep and the Fourth Age begins - however, a new threat arises...

¤ Wrath of the Dragonkin ¤

As the gods leave, the Dragonkin emerge. While the exact reasons are unknown, presumably because they had been unable to deal with the divine False Users of the Stone of Jas during the God Wars, they begin to terrorise the various settlements around the world until, in the year 100 of the Fourth Age, they are driven back to their castle by Robert the Strong, where they remain imprisoned.

Oh, and around the same time, Saranthium is mysteriously sent to oblivion.

Well, now that the timeline has been presented, things become fairly obvious, don't they? We could easily blame Saranthium's destruction on Zamorakians, which would make sense, but there is fairly compelling evidence that it was, in fact, the Dragonkin who were responsible.

After all, they were quite active in roughly the same period that Saranthium met its demise, so does it not make perfect sense that the city fell victim to the rage of the 'kin? Personally I'd reckon it does.

What I like about this theory myself is that it makes perfect sense - it also provides proof of the Dragonkin rage in the Fourth Age, making that seem more of a catastrophic event than it might seem in a museum display.

Thoughts? Comments?

I love this theory because it explains it so well. Ive also thought of how saranthium got destroyed but never put two and two together, and this being a fourth age event, Im kind of ashamed of that :P

Anyway you forgot to mention the curse of arrav lore, I jnow in that it mentions - or rather - indicates the ruins of saranthium indirectly, which as far as I know is the earliest reference of its destruction alreafy having happened, and that was in tge 700s of yhe fourth age. A big gap from 100, but the kin still make the most sence. Id source the lore article but Im on my phone atm.
You can only fully appreciate a story when you experience it through the eyes of one of its characters.

Sithaph: Strength grows within me; the power resonates.

Strisath: I feel it, too, and it is vast! The dragonkin shall be freed - we shall cause the world to quake with our might.

Sakirth: Let us bring terror and pain to the small races! Terror and pain!

Sithaph: Skethhz*zz!

Maybe that is where Saradomin hid the SoJ while he had it, in the rebuilt ruins of Saranthium? Or maybe they dug too deep and too greedily and awoke something better left undisturbed? (Tolkien reference :P , & A Souls Bane)

I also get the feeling that Dragonkin would kill lots of people just for fun anyway.

During the God Wars, he hid it at the Fist of Guthix site. And not so much fun, but more to cool their rage. But they probably think it's fun too. :P
