Yeah, surviving your home-planet getting obliterated by hiding, only to be enslaved and bound to a life of excruciating pain later on, getting progressively worse every time the forbidden fruit gets touched, and being forced to kill people in the process of finding an antidote would be a good reason for wrecking a city holding freaking banners of the person who got off with it.

Awesome theory!! I really hope that Saranthium plays a role in the upcoming Archaeology update—I never hear about the city compared to how I hear about Senntisten, and this is the perfect time for Jagex to release all these histories!
The dragonkin being responsible for Saranthium's demise also really plays into the current storyline. Soooo many reasons for them to be the feature event that destroyed the city.
