I think it's pretty much confirmed that the Odd Old Man was being controlled by an artefact related to Xau-tak. He also wasn't really doing anything unethical. All he wanted while being controlled were bones and there is nothing inherently unethical with that..
Bones to build a fairly strong body for the skull that was in his backpack that has obvious mind controlling powers. Granted, we don't know exactly what the horror wanted to do, but I'm not exactly going to trust it or Xau's intentions considering the Odd Old Man set us up to be killed by it while he was under its influence.

I'd forgotten that we fight the horror before he becomes sane again. So, that's fair enough. Before that though, collecting bones is pretty weird but there is nothing inherently wrong with it on the surface at least. No, I don't think trusting it is a good idea at all. Then again, the list of people the PC can inherently trust isn't exactly extensive.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

Any speculations on what Xau-Tak's alignment could be? Do you think its possible the Square Root of -1 in the answers for their tier could possibly mean something more than just a joke?

Xau-Tak's tier was basically a joke answer about how we cannot comprehend it.
I think that answer may have been more direct than you expect it to be.
If you enter it on any common calculator, sqrt(-1) does not compute. However in engineering the square root of negative numbers is a very important concept. They are represented as
i
, or imaginary numbers.
The result of sqrt(1) being 1/-1, this means that sqrt(-1) is 1 *
i
, or just
i
.
So here we have a god of Tier
i
.
What this tells us, is that Xau-Tak an Elder God that exists purely as a concept, yet still has an effect on the world.
Information which by the way fits perfectly in with everything we already know about Xau-Tak, and with its Lovecraftian theme.
Though it could also mean that Xau-Tak itself is imaginary, and what we have on our hands is a cult-like church of lunatics believing in a god that does not actually exist.

If any of you saw the new Nex guide video that was put on the Runescape channel, you see at the end the teaser they put on twitter a wile ago, the darkness stirs one. I thought it was supposed to be a hint at possible Xau-Tak content coming, but is it confirmed this is what the teaser was talking about?

It's confirmed it was about Nex, yeah.

Mod Wilson left Jagex. RIP XAU-TAK...
On that day, many Xau-Tak theorists took on this expression.
Wilson is the latest victim to fall into the gaping maw of eternity...
But fear not, while the author may die, the stories never will.
Nor will its Characters,
They might get hacked to bits and do an abomination that requires tons of working around to make sense like Salt in the Wound.
I still stand by my god bacteria theory, however. Even if it isn't Xau-Tak (the Mods still never answered), I think there is an ascended microbe or two, and this might suit the maw of eternity.

This thread catalogues all references to Xau-Tak in game, and by extension connections to the Cthulhu Mythos correct?
Well I was reading the lorebooks today from Angel of Death and The Promised Gift mentions that Zaros gave Nex four elemental stones of power to turn her into the powerful headache she is now, the four being Smoke, Shadow, Ice, and Blood, the elements of the lower planes.
What's interesting is that Zaros mentions that he obtained the Ice elemental stone from the icy world of Leng, the home-world of the Glacors. Leng in the Cthulhu Mythos is a cold plateau that has different locations each time it's described. At one point it's described to possibly be a lost city in Antarctica, and a place where multiple realities converge.
I have no theory based on this, I am sure it's just a reference to a book the developers had a fondness for.
So as you said Xau-Tak is based on Cthulhu from Lovecraft 's novels. I just googled it and it seems a lot of Lovecraft's stuff are incorporated in games and other media so I wonder if you read the novels?

Majority of Lovecraft's own work was in the form of short fiction (novellas and short stories), not novels.
They're in the public domain, so you should have no trouble locating them online, assuming you're interested.
