For those who don't know, the Oracle is said to have stated that none are wiser than Socrates, to which Socrates responded, 'what I do not know, I do not think to know.' In other words, he believed the Oracle's words meant that he was the wisest because he alone recognized and acknowledged his lack of knowledge.
Not sure I totally agree with this. There is the element of him being careful of not thinking to know what he cannot know. (What he cannot know is untruth). So unlike most others he does not think he knows stuff that's not true. However this doesn't rule out him knowing anything at all. It means everything he thinks he knows is true.
Yes, that is what I meant. My apologies if that didn't come across well.
You're assuming the anima goes into Gielinor instead of into the individuals themselves, killing may be required to get at the anima.
Worse Zaros may be planning to suggest they farm intelligent races so they can feed from the Anima over time.
A very practical solution! Perhaps sacrifices annually. Enough to save the elder gods from extinction without causing too much of a disruption of the locals. Just take them to the nearest anima rift, push them in, and watch them dissolve into pure energy that is fed into the elders' chambers.
But didn't we already establish in FoTG that anima did go to the planet?
The WG's presence on Freneskae was enough to give Mah a 'shot of adrenaline' and she didn't siphon any energy directly from us at all, nor did Zaros.
In my opinion, it's not so much that Zaros doesn't feel remorse or shame so much as not being willing to show it. This would be a natural response to learning that the love aura that Seren gives off is addictive and kept him from going out into the universe to learn.
In fact, I would say that in many cases the ones that don't show these things are actually the most emotional. Zaros had always been frustrated that he couldn't find any opportunities to learn and go through what mortals may call growing up, and he seems sad that he and Seren resent each other as a result of the aura abilities. And at the same time he has hopes that he can patch things up with her.
As for not expressing himself and showing a sociopathic side, he likely doesn't want to coerce people with his ability. This came as a result of Mah seemingly chaining him up and, in his mind, coercing him to stay on Freneskae.

I thought this was a good response but one thing bothers me. They are familiars. We still don't really know if they are the souls of dead species, or phantasms of the mind. If they do have sapient souls, why didn't they go to an actual underworld? and if they are phantasms then all we really know is what the player thinks.

The nihil familiars are an interesting bunch. They can't merely be reflections of our thoughts because they can know things the player doesn't (ex: the smoke nihil dialogue I posted). I'd also guess that they aren't denizens of the spirit plane, as we use no spirit shards when making their pouch.
Given the use of elder energy when making the pouches, I'd guess that, unlike regular pouches that temporarily borrow a creature of the spirit plane (which, based on the camel warrior book are a belief/perception of an idea given form), the nihil familiars (as well as the muspah familiar) are being similarly borrowed from Freneskae.
Here's a quote about Zaros's morality where he mentions the true sociopath. This discussion brings nothing new to the table.

"[Saradomin] is self-righteous, seeing things only in extremes. It was from him that I first learned of the notions of good and evil. I dismiss such notions – there are only actions and consequences. We agreed to disagree. Everything to him is either black or white, but he himself exists in the grey. Ergo, he is a contradiction."
