While I don't hate the GE by any means, I do think the game was better before the GE. Or perhaps I should say, "would be" instead.
I am very frustrated with the current state of MMOs. And one of the things I dislike the most is the current trend towards player control. Players deciding what gets developed. Players controlling the market. That kind of thing. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a bad thing. It's just that it inevitably leads to games becoming more and more one-dimensional. And it's also a root cause of dead content.
Since OSRS is essentially a nostalgia-driven game experience, I think it's one of the few situations where the level of control the players have is maybe appropriate. It also helps that the community seems largely on the same page as to what they want.
Then again, that's not always a good thing either. When a majority has a consensus and consistently votes in the content
they
like, the minorities are at risk of being constantly left out.
Anyways, I digressed a bit, but my point is that removing the GE makes for a healthier game economy, in my opinion. Instead of having a very clear set price for an item, it's more muddled and up to the players themselves to decide how much they're willing to pay.
But hey, my own distaste for player-controlled economies and the subsequent valuation of achievements is the main reason I play an Iron account.
