I completely agree with Blastiblue's post on page 41. When the loyalty program was released, I was a little uncomfortable with it, but I accepted it, thinking that it wouldn't do any harm.
Then, when the SoF was released, I grew a bit more uncomfortable, but again, I accepted it as just a little side game that I can use every now and then.
I was planning on subscribing this weekend after a nearly 1-year leave from Runescape membership, but when I logged on today, I saw this. As Blastiblue said, if I'm paying a monthly recurring fee to play the full version of the game, then I feel entitled to all of the game's content. This introduces content that I will never lay a finger on because of its price, even though I'm already paying for the game.
One thing that I like(d) about Runescape is that it wasn't like any other game. It used to be that while I was a non-member, or was not spending money on anything, nothing pressed me to spend. There were no in-game advertisements to subscribe, nor were there any stores that asked me to buy virtual content (A very intrusive message appears upon log in with the new store).
I understand that a corporation has to make money, but does that really have to come at the expense of the players? Jagex has already raised the membership fee to *7.99, from the *4.99 that I used to pay, which is plenty, in my opinion. Furthermore, they're rounding on 200 million registered users (regardless of whether those are bots, real users, or multiple accounts for one person, the web traffic still exists), so it's not as if a lack of users is causing them to lose money.
At the very least, I would like a legitimate explanation and rationale for the direction Jagex has been heading in with these recent updates. As a person who has spent countless hours and dollars on the game, and one who is willing to do so again, I feel entitled to at least that.
