Oh, I wasn't aware of that. IVP is clearly controlled by it's board of people, so, that's Alex, Mark, Rod and one other? Is that what you were getting at?
I'm seriously under the thought (being we have NXT now) that if the deal is done, Jagex will be owned by the Chinese thick and fast.
As far as I know, Rod is just their hired worker. It is IVP board and shareholders who push the policies.
I guess that MTX for them will be to tap into is the phat market which Jagex hasn't done over fears of upsetting people. They may have spotted this so it wouldn't really surprise me to see it happening.
I do think that opening Runescape to the Asian market is a fantastic idea, because gaming is pretty big over there and microtransactions are the norm in some games.
However, expectations for new markets should never take priority over expectations for the majority/current marketplace, whose loyalty and positive experiences you've already built.

Really hope the firm involved loves the game for what it is and doesn't want to suck all the profit out of it.
When they're a failing mining company that is in huge debt and are trying to 'diversify' by buying out a game company, they don't really care and are only after the investment and profit, especially when they are paying $300M reportedly for it.

I'm a little concerned about the future rate of microtransactions. Paying to win is the norm for a lot of Asian servers, though I can't quite say the same about Asian games, because I know that Neko Atsume and Puzzle & Dragons (both mobile games) are honestly pretty great when it comes to not ripping off their customers and on customer loyalty.
One of two things will happen: they will want to make it highly competitive no-lifing (cutting back mtx) or they want to milk it for every cent it is worth (selling skillcapes).

Chances are nothing that affects us is going to happen, there might be some behind the scenes things that happen but it probably won't affect us.
It's probably going to be like what happened to Minecraft after Microsoft bought it over, nothing.
Microsoft actually works in the games and technology field. Shangdong is a MINING company, how well do you think they can handle a video game?
