I showed this to my wife, as strategy games are more her style.

She used to play Runescape with me, way back in the day ('03-'04) but quit some time ago, a long while before the Signature Heroes were even introduced. I'm sure if she got playing, she'd catch up on all the lore that happened since she left.

To the doubters and haters: now why should I care what the kids think? I'm a grumpy middle-aged man who has the strength to dis Magic: the Gathering, Yugioh, Pokemón, and the whole collectible card game era. Yeah, y'know, someone who's old enough to be part of the gamer set that's mega-obsessed with European board games now, but wishes they'd go back to tabletop RPGs. Y'know, part of the age group that includes Wil Wheaton. Yeah, I've never heard of Hearthstone, and I don't care.

Hopefully, Jagex will take it easy on the MTX-- if it's deployed widely in this game, I'll be disappointed; it will remind me of the Magic era too much. Rather annoying to have to plunk down lots of money just to keep a competitive edge (although a few told me it was possible to get good with a basic Magic deck). Still, I think it's a good new move that could introduce or reintroduce a lot of folks to the main Runescape game. Ha, yeah, I don't really care about OldSchool either.

Unsure how they can make it differ from Hearthstone but i will give it a try when the closed beta is available for me to play!

Little spoilers for you:

The way Chronicles differs from Hearthstone is:

1- it isn't a battle to death against your opponent right away. Instead, we build our hero's stats or nerf our enemies' hero's stats with our cards. Each player does its own thing on its side, or sometimes put out a card which hinders our enemy's hero's progress. In the end, the characters we built fight each other in a hands-free duel and we watch them fight. The player who's hero survives wins.

2. While in Hearthstone there are minions, in Chronicles, there are monsters. When you put a monster in your deck, it's with the intention of having your hero figurine fight it and loot it. Monsters have attack and health stats, like in Hearthstone, but no mana cost. It's all about "at this point in the game, am I ready to fight this monster without killing my hero?" It's up to you to judge if the health loss from the encounter is worth the loot.

3. There is no such thing as mana in Chronicles. Instead there is gold. Gold isn't acquired and renewed with each round. Not all cards require gold to be used, but more powerful cards might require gold to be spent, and in bigger quantity the better the effect is.

4. Unlike Hearthstone, the board can influence the gameplay. It offers small boosts like +1 card at the beginning of the turn or better worth out of gold-requiring cards, etc.

5. The way you use your cards is different. There is no board control to fight for. It's all about combos. You check out your remaining health, total gold and attack stats and available spells, and you do maths about deciding how to chain up your cards to get the most out of what you have with the least health loss.
