2 things i would like to see for the authenticator to make it as safe as JAG is are, give it the security questions back. You will only need them when you activate the authenticator on a device or when you want to remove it.

To make them easier to remember, let us make or own questions and recommend people to write it down on a piece of paper (Not on your computer!)

And what about giving players a small reward when they activate authenticator like you did the the email register.

On this way much more people will have a secured account!

Mission accomplished (sort of).

Except the following:

1. We still recommend that all users upgrade to Authenticator as soon as possible. To ensure the highest levels of account security, some future RuneScape features will only be available to those who have enabled RuneScape Authenticator.



Oooook…instead of making that vague to us, what sort of features? Just curious about how limiting these features are to players who can (or can not) get the authenticator installed and running.

2. Any new accounts or accounts that do not currently have JAG enabled will only have access to RuneScape Authenticator for an additional layer of security.

So… All new accounts will not have the option for Jag?And these new accounts are "FORCED" to use the authenticator only instead or have just second rate security? YEP…see nothing wrong there.

3. If you choose to remove JAG from your account, or you contact our Customer Service team and they need to disable it to help you gain access to your account, you will not be able to reactivate it. You will still be able to secure your account using the RuneScape Authenticator.



Sensible, yet…the second part of that clause, fascinating.

I think in this instance, particularly with all the random $49.95 charges coming to peoples' credit card accounts, I am staying with JAG. If it becomes inactive then I will be 'unprotected' and if my account is hacked I am through. JAG worked fine.

As one clan mate said, I can afford to lose RuneScape but cannot afford random $49.95 charges, regardless of whether it is coincidence or not. Kinda really hate this. A lot of years spent here.

Authenticator codes on a desktop or laptop

Its good that jagex have a help page telling you how to run winauth from a usb stick but they need to include there what to do if the codes aren't working eg if their clock on their computer is not in sync even if it is cutting and pasting info from the winauth site.

From the previous forum thread on the news post about authenticator being released, the codes not working seemed to be a common problem.

I was lucky as I didn't have a problem, but others were not so fortunate and having info on that help page with the instructions how to run winauth on a usb stick, and a bit of trouble shooting if having problems eg about time synch etc would be helpful as it is all in the same spot and saves people having to go all over the web for help, esp since jagex is suggesting using winaut*.

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get something running that is recommended and it not working for you, and posting on the forum, and having others laugh at you or having to read thru a looooong thread to find where other users have posted a solution.

Why does Jagex need to do this? Why don't the players go there themselves? Is it because they are lazy and want everything to be done for them?

Last week i set up the authenticator on my account with my iphone. Today i changed phone and installed the ap* on my new samsung phone. I can't use the ap* on this phone because its not registered on my runscape account there is only 1 possible option and disable your safety settings. You have to begin all over again, there are no other options very strange i think.

You need the QR-code to scan, which is not possible if you already have the Authenticator safety installed.
So disabling the authenticator is the only way.
Just dont forget to reinstal it :)
