Jagex needs to do this because they are telling people to set this up and how oh so easy it is to do it has nothing to do with being lazy whats lazy and asinine is you berating everyone who has asked questions about this new item they are being forced to get so do everyone a favor if you arent going to offer advice on how they can get this done then SHUT THE **** UP.............and yes i dont care if you want to ban me from forums but i have had enough of this player being an ass to everyone and not one forum mod or jagex mod has said anything

Thank you for replying for me, I had a busy weekend and not had time to get back to the thread.

The things is that people are having difficulty getting it to run. I am not talking about the ones who don't want to install this 3rd party software I am talking about those who have and its not working for them.

As this is part of a security feature for runescape, the fact that a 3rd party software is being used does not absolve Jagex from helping people get it running.

Many people don't have the time to scroll thru pages and pages of threads, or different threads.
I was saying that if they included a link to help when it doesn't work, rather than relying on other players giving suggestions, it would mean the players having trouble would get into the game faster. Advice should come from Jagex tech team.

I know you don't agree with what I am saying and that is fine. I really don't care whether you agree with me or not. I guess that is the advantage of being an older person- you no longer worry about what people think of you.

I try to help anyone if I can and your comments are not helpful to those struggling to get the program to work.

Anything that makes it easier for players to get help that Jagex can do is helpful. Things not working as they should is a fact of life. So Jagex providing links saves the forum and threads being filled with threads saying "its not working".

It is up to Jagex whether they take up my idea or not. But if they do then you would be within your rights to complain people are not reading and could post a link to where they can find the help.

JAG is a hassle to most people , Get rid of it. What happens when your own email is locked and your locked out of your own account? and recovering it did nothing that would have been Sad maybe.
With the new authenticator it sounds a lot safer rather then having to resolve your email or get it unlocked when you cant its using a phone and even if you don't have a phone desktop app works great too.
Jag is a big problem to those whose emails are locked and inaccessible most people just want to enjoy the game and what it has to offer but its a real pain having to enter your jag answers and what not. with the new authenticator all it takes is one code and 30 secs to enter it.

I second this. I for one will not be using authenticator. I should not have to use two separate devices to play an online game. That's just dumb. Cool idea as an addition to JAG, but replacing JAG with it just does not make sense.

So now if someone steals your phone, they'll have access to your name, your emails (probably your authenticator information), and they'll have your phone to authenticate without knowing the answers to your questions. Much less secure. Much more cumbersome. And much more annoying.

Additionally, I would suggest just keeping it as an additional security method to run along side JAG. That would mean more security and it would be less cumbersome. I set up my JAG when it first came out and not once have I been prompted to use my questions to unlock the computer I always use. Why would I have to do that once a month? That would be incredibly annoying. And I'm sure many players won't like that. So please make Authenticator be an addition to JAG and keep JAG around for use folks who don't want to use two devices to log in and don't want to be annoyed once a month to enter their code.

I'd love to use this. I really would. I just can't get it to work. Everytime I enter the code I'm given I am told it's the wrong code. The times on my phone and my PC are the same. Instead I'm left with another useless way to protect my account.

You need the QR-code to scan, which is not possible if you already have the Authenticator safety installed.
So disabling the authenticator is the only way.

I just went out and bought a fancy new smart phone on the weekend, so I am pleased you posted this as I am forwarned. Mine is an android but I guess I will have to follow the same steps as you. I shall read thru the faq as well.
I didn't buy it to use the authenticater on the phone but no doubt will do at some stage. For now I will stick with winauth until I have a bit more time to sit down and get used to using the phone lol as at the moment I just know how to do txt messages and answer or ring from the phone heheh

I am not sure if the phones work the same way as winauth, but win auth also had problems if your pc time was slightly out of sync.

The thread i found helpful was this

The code I receive from the Authenticator isn't working, why not?

The code your Authenticator generates changes every 1 minute or so. It might be that you've entered your code too late.
Also, you could've forgotten to hit the refresh button on WinAuth.

If that doesn't solve it, right-click your Authenticator and click on Sync Time.


It's still not working! What do I do?

This is probably because the date and time on your PC is not completely up to date.
To set it up, you need to:

1. Click on the date and time that's shown on the lower right corner of your screen
2. Click on Date and time settings (could be slightly different worded, I'm on a Dutch Windows)
3. Click on Change Timezone on the Date and Time tab and pick your current timezone.
4. Click on Change Settings on the Internet Time tab, check the box that says "synch clock with an internet time server" and type in time.windows.***

(*** = the first 3 letters of commercial)

5. Click on "Ok" to save those settings and then click on "Ok" again to close the Date and Time settings.

Your clock should now be synched.
