Viewing over a course of 19+ years, I can say that the community has changed drastically.

There are still good/positive people running around, yet the negative is a bit higher in recent times. But that's just relative, because many people see the negative aspects faster than the positive aspects of the community
Is it because of boredom? Maybe.
Bad times in IRL? Possible.

The great times of people helping eachother was a great time.
If you ask a question these days, you now get the answer 'google it' or 'look it up at...' most of the times.
It's great if you could show the player on how to do it, or where you can find something. That's more positive thinking and it'll let you start knowing more players.
I remember, both when Legend's quest and Murder Mystery came out (both from 2003), nobody had a clue what to do. Many players asked 'what can I do?' Plenty of people, who were a step further in the quest said 'Try this', 'Try that'.
These kinds of things are the things I haven't seen for ages.

Back in the days, if you had like found 5 gems, many people where happy for you and said 'good luck' when you went away to craft some amulets and congratulated you when you came back 1 hour later with a newly crafted diamond amulet.
Nowadays, I see many reactions like 'if you don't get 100k xp in an hour, you're doing it wrong'.

Many of these 'negative' things come from the players themself.
The fact that there's less interaction also comes from many AFK-able activities. I know RS has to evolve to be able to survive. Those AFK-able activities also play a roll on less communication.
Prior to that, you had to click for all your items to be made. (or mined or fished). You had to watch the screen all the time. So when you see a message, you could response at the moment itself.
If your character is making something, many people don't watch the screen just to see an entire inventory to be filled with logs or fish or flatpacks. Hence many watch other sites or TV. So they miss the opportunity to response quickly.

Also whenever you try something like a pure, many don't want to understand why you should do certain things. I started out as a prayer skiller. I traied everything besides combat stats, except for prayer. During the first 9 years, I've had plenty of reactions in the sense of 'why would you do such a thing?'.
Some people don't want to know that other play with a different sets of 'rules' besides Ironman, Hardcore Ironman Ultimate Ironman.

Use the runescape forums to raise your voice on the matter!...."your post is moved to rants"..."no. no, but this thread is a recent game update..." "it's a rant".....umm then what goes in recent? "recent updates" "but it is a recent...okay..." logic of todays people just make me question the intelligence levels.

No matter where your thread ends up, you face the Forum count mob, it's easier to just say "it's not a problem(for me) so live with it....move on..."

"but jagex made a mistake" oh humans make mistakes... "yeah they forgot about the math skill...."

---------

Basically to sum it all up, these people that are 'viewed' great on these forums are actually pushing players away from the forums, hence a bad community. poor design and It's a silencing tactic.

From gaming company policies regarding MTX, how they treat players, how they 'value' your time, how game updates are causing 'dead content' chains vs keeping all content good for low levels on their journey to high level and end game content and gear design.

^angry mob will go against you if you make threads of the above. the verdict "why even bother anymore?"

As the world's strongest legal mind for the people and activist for true designs, you shouldn't need laws/policies in place to prevent ones greedy goals. It's common courtesy if you value the people/players and stand by your product your selling.

These forums are in a mess because jagex wants to save money, but they make enough to fix it....if you can get away with it, you will do it. Do they care for the players at the end of the day? Money talks. all motives decode the truth on why you did it vs other ways.

Eye within a pyramid with a circle around the pyramid is a problem solving calculator, i know everything to a degree :P

.

the issue now with helping people is you get told "let them play how they want" even if they asked a question to be helped.

or

you get labelled as being an elitist for giving high endgame tips or advice on armour. again even if the question is "what is the best item or gear to use here?"

people have and do help but they get shot down in many different ways for trying to help, and people see that now as toxicity too.

I havent gotten the last three skilling pets. sad but true.

My friend got one other day and i took time not only to congratulate but I took the time
to go see it. OFC i knew what it looked like but I am glad someone got it at least.

I met one of my best friends a few years ago (he is now a dep owner in my clan.. but well
deserved not just because hes such a good friend). He got 2 pets in like 5 minutes. I didnt
know him at all. Never met the guy. I gratz him on his pets. Next thing i know I find out he
is a super guy and great friend.

I believe the community as a whole needs to think about being nice. I liked the saying in
this post earlier " do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

But no matter where you go, what you do.. be it work, family get togethers, shopping or even church, you are gonna find people that are just jerks. Your gonna find people you instantly dislike. But in real life there is a cordiality that isnt in games or online as a whole.

I think alot of negative things are people blowing off steam and knowing that they are hiding behind a computer screen and can act any old way.

Maybe we could all just be nicer. maybe it would spread . (probably not but there is always hope).
The richest person is not who has the most. It is who Needs the least.

@Tenebri: Indeed, being shot down for helping isn't helpfull either, no. :(

Anyway, I had a great encounter yesterday at the Light Animica rocks, with someone who was cheerful and happy to see people who weren't playing the mainstream way. I'm glad there are such cheerful people.

Today, at the same place, I was being laughed at because I for trying to be interactive.

The cheerful encouter is the one I enjoy the most. And I hope interactions as those will come more often. If it ever will become more often, I dunno. But I hope. :)

unfortunately thats just how the internet, there hasn't been a game where i haven't ran into toxicity. it seems like everyday you get that one person. seems like a domino effect affecting everyone around them. i'd say take a break if overwhelmed thats just me. Behind a screen, anyone can say anything without fear of repercussions (MOSTLY). They don't have to witness the person behind the other screen getting upset, mad or sad. There is no empathy for the most part when talking to 1's and 0's. Things definitely change face to face. I've met some bad people on here, some horrible people as well. And some great people, mainly in clans. There are some that just want to play the game and be left alone and some who have sat behind a screen so long, an argument is the only way to feel like they're important. It's a shame but even I find myself falling for this pitfall. I'm sorry you had such bad experiences and I hope you do get in touch with some good quality people in this game. Runescape is fairly tame compared to other games. But I can admit that being scammed back in the day has made me a recluse when it comes to strangers. I bet other players have experienced it too.

Check it out!

I'm sure everyone gets scammed at least once in their rs career it's bound to happen lol mine was back in the day selling a rune scim in the east bank of varrock upstairs for 3.2k instead of 32k it happens literally every game has trolls it's just how it is I still like to help people out regardless if I can because that's just who I am and there are the people that like to scam people to make themselves feel better to each their own
