Sorry for not keeping up with my thread, I had to take a break for real-world stuff. I have returned to playing regularly again and quite frankly I am disappointed to see that nothing appears to have changed on this front.

With that in mind I am bumping the thread to continue spreading awareness. I appreciate the FMods for their work in keeping the discussion on topic for something that is so controversial and encourage everyone to remain focused on the underlying issue here: Jagex does not apply its principles across all its games and lets a fork of the game, which supposedly has more active players, continue to exist without this update. This gives the impression that Jagex does not really care about diversity and quite frankly is offensive to me and others that they would give us a half-update like this to apparently appease some of the people upset by it.

With the new quest Murder on the Border we have seen Jagex take other strides in diversity such as including pronouns for NPCs in the game. I am of the opinion that these are just appeasement updates, and that Jagex does not truly back such beliefs. I do not have a mechanism in-game to set my preferred pronouns, which quite frankly is offensive if Jagex wants to present itself as progressive enough to provide us with pronouns for NPCs. These updates are piecemeal, the closest thing is being able to select a title variation of "duchy" for the fort. The best we have, in general, on this issue is the ability to switch the "gendered" titles in game, which only reaffirms a gender binary and contrasts NPCs that have pronouns "they/them" IMO.

And most importantly, absolutely zero of these types of updates are seen in OSRS, which is just telling to say the least. If Jagex wants to promote these types of changes then it is appalling to me that they refrain from updating OSRS with them. Is this a company-wide motto or just the creative expression of a few employees who work on RS3? I am more offended than ever at it.

im not gonna lie, the Ali naming theme was always hilarious to me. not for racial reasons, but because Ali IS a ver common name. I've been all over the Middle east, and in my phone i have saved probably 200 Ali's, and at least double that Muhammed's. the fact of the mater is that they are very common names, and having a high concentration of those common names made runescape feel a bit closer to real life.

That's the way I always viewed it - I don't think it's stereotyping, it's just a fact that some names are very common in various parts of the world.

Even if it was not considered racist I can see how one might feel that it is. But that probably brings up a more important conversation about how such topics can even be discussed.

To me this update feels like someone with good intentions at Jagex wanted to correct some perceived errs, but did so in a way that was disrespectful to the players by only applying it to 1 game and failing to have that conversation to begin with. What are the limits?

What if one day a new employee decides that it is offensive that the majority of the leaders (Kings, Dukes, etc) in the Misthalin/Kandarin/Asgarnian area of the game (i.e. the ones that are the largest and we have greatest access to) happen to be light skin colored men?

Should we expect to see an update where NPCs are rewritten to be female and various skin colors? Or, is that considered acceptable and not anti-diverse but just incidental? Where is the line drawn?

Many questions that have no answers and I suspect we will never hear from it, just be told that this was a lapse of judgment years ago that could be construed as offensive today, and the powers that be deemed it necessary to correct, but only in the game with the smaller player base. Since you know, lest we upset the players in the other game while we feed you the lie that Jagex truly cares about these sensitive subjects. The best action would be consistency here not raising awareness and feigning concern, only to promptly ignore it entirely.

Quite frankly, I am offended because before it could be seen as innocuous and coincidental, but now we know it is intentional as they refuse to remediate the very same issues in OSRS.

Calling everybody "Ali" is quite simply offensive, borderline racist, as they are real people too

No, it is quite simply funny. And they are not real people, they are NPCs in a game. They should not have changed a thing. Learn the difference between a game and real life.
