Jagex at times creates milestones for their employees to reach where they'd go outside to have what they call Jolly Events/Days to celebrate all the work they've been putting into the game which has proven to keep getting lots of players attention, even those who've said they've considered quitting cause Jagex didn't make RuneScape like a game by Nintendo, there's no end date for RuneScape's construction of more content and tweaking will end because that's not Jagex for you, it may be some video game making companies thing to do, make new games and support them with updates until they they've finalized a product not worth updating anymore but that's how Jagex does things.
So there's where 1 sort of use for where the happiness in GETTING the money from players comes into play.
The Well of Goodwill in RS3 and OSRS let players be able to donate their items in game as a way to help Jagex convert the sum of gp into equivalent of each dollar it sums up while also saying to only trade items in game to never get gold selling sites hijack real world bank accounts.
From what I remember, I think there was some Jmod's who donated out of the wallet real world dollars as well to the charities, the charities sometimes get people's attention so much, that some quitters have come back and it's also brought new players attention around the world as well to play the game as well.
Played RuneScape 2 when it came out a few days ago, that’s also when RuneScape Classic was still playable!
