Opinions & The 'New' Temporary Code of Conduct Rules

Since the 'new' temporary Code of Conduct rules have been in place in every practical sense the RSOF community has been subject to a wide variety of opinions that you would not normally think you would find on a gaming forum that caters to a global community.

RSOF has now become a platform for the far right to the liberal left, a place to discuss sexuality, a place to voice controversial opinions on race, creed, place of birth, national origin, nationalism & religion to name a few topics currently being discussed.

Not only is the RSOF community becoming a platform for discussions on these types of topics that tend to spark controversy, because we are a global community, the community is also being subject to images that are controversial too. In addition, the community is also being subject to links that direct users to off-site platforms that are controversial & are springboards that are used as a means to cause division within the RSOF community.

It appears that the rational behind this change was a reactionary response to a major PR blunder as noted by Mod Balances reply on An Apology by Mod Balance (Qfc 75-76-123-65909547 09-May-2017 12:01:09 - Last edited on 09-May-2017 12:02:10 by Mod Balance) thread.

Moderation - Old Rules vs. New Rules

It was implied that moderation of topics & posts would now be in accordance with the 'new' rule set.



It was also implied that some of the moderation team may have difficulties adjusting to the new moderation guidelines.



The above replies were made on the Changing the Forum Rules by Mod Matthe (Qfc 14-15-958-65909298 08-May-2017 15:55:09 - Last edited on 09-May-2017 12:58:32 by Mod Matthe) thread.

However, it is pretty obvious that moderation of the 'new' rules still appears to be subject & applied based on if the person moderating the material has personal leanings for or against the topic or post. Nothing appears to have changed in that regards from the way moderation was applied based on the old Code of Conduct rules & on how it is now applied with the 'new' rule set.

It is also appears that the transition to the 'new' moderation guidelines may have been easier said than done for some folks.

Learned Something New

Tucked away in the Rants forum is a thread called simply, Bots (Qfc 285-286-847-65917214). Appears to be the first thread created by that account. OP was upset about the Wine of Zamorak bots.

Under the 'new' rules this thread was locked because 'I've locked this as bot threads only upset the Community.'

Of all the things that have been posted to RSOF since the 'new' rules have taken effect, I did not realize that it was 'bot threads' that had contributed to the division of the RSOF community & was what has upset some of the long time users of RSOF to take a respite away from the forums recently.

A little bit of background information on Motherboard, the site that the article was published on.

The Motherboard twitter account shows 172k followers. Four hours ago they tweeted this out.



Leif Johnson, the author of the article, according to his Twitter bio writes for IGN, VICE: Motherboard, PC Gamer, Glixel, GameSpot, Paste, and more. He has 2,325 followers on his twitter account.

Four hours ago, he retweeted that tweet.



K, that makes, erm, lets see, 174,325 people who at least saw the tweet. No idea how many actually read the article though.

Tbh, after I read the article my first thought was 'OMG! Who in the heck would want to play RuneScape after seeing that tweet or reading that article!?' After all the article did appear to me to do a pretty good job of making the players of OS RS look pretty bad.

My next thought was, 'What in the heck were the folks at Jagex thinking?' Is this the new company strategy for PR blunders? Publicly throwing shade on your customers & throwing them under the bus to cover what appears to be your lack of direct communication with them?
