What is the Menaphos Insiders Experiment?

Chapter One


With the Menaphos Insiders Experiment coming to a close I thought it would be fun to share my experience with the RSOF community. I thought I would start off with discussing the 'aims' of the experiment since it has nothing to do with any upcoming Menaphos Insiders spoilers.

Interesting enough, once again, it appears that more effort went into explaining the aims of the Menaphos Insiders Experiment on social media than on the official website. It is a shame really since one of the golden rules of Marketing 101 is the importance of directing traffic inbound to the companies official website to learn more about products, services, updates, & stuff like, well, the Menaphos Insiders Experiment.

As mentioned in previous posts, Marketing 101 tends to support the ideals that social media augments a companies official website rather than being a replacement for it.

If the only information I had about the aims of the experiment came from the official website in comparison to what has been posted on social media I would feel a bit short changed.

Isn't this what the community has been saying for the last four years or so, that yes, they are feeling a bit short changed when it comes to being kept abreast about the latest information on RSOF?

If one of the aims of this experiment was to make me go on a search & hunt mission off-site & away from the official website to better understand the aims of the experiment (because it appears that no time was taken to answer any community questions on thread posted to RSOF), then that goal was achieved.

It was interesting that one aim mentioned was reaching out to the in-game community about the Menophas Insider spoilers.

Currently, my in-game time is spent fishinvention at LRC. For the most part, when there is in-game chat going on there the in-game chat is blocked out since I do utilize the in-game profanity filter. Tbh, butting in on a conversation full of stars is not my cup of tea & what bits of the blocked out conversation that I can make out, it is highly doubtful that there would be much interest in hearing about Menaphos concept art.

Even those who may have mentioned the Menaphos spoilers within clan channels or discord channels for the most part would not be directing those folks to the official website to view the Menophas concept art but rather would be directing them away from it to view it.

I am not sure how the metric of reaching out to the in-game community or clan channels could even be measured or why that metric would be used as part of this experiment either.

I found it interesting that there is mention that the Menaphos Insiders experiment is "a test based on dark social". This was mentioned in relationship to Menaphos Insiders being representative of various platforms.

However, brand marketing typically defines dark social channels as 'messaging' apps like FB Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp, etc. Rather than go into the analytics of tracking Dark social referrals I will say that Dark Social is estimated to make up 68% of all social shares.

I did realize that there was one way that could be utilized to measure 'referrals' in relationship to the Menaphos Insiders spoilers. However, I did not utilize what could be utilized as a 'tracking tag' because it did not fit the format in which I wanted to present the spoiler on RSOF.

Tbh, I only saw what could be used as a 'tracking tag' in relationship to the Menaphos Insiders spoilers only being utilized once. I'll save that bit of information for another chapter though.

"The aims of this are 'fewfold', really.

1) to work out where players share information and how they do it.

2) one of the areas we really struggle to share information (ironically) is in-game; we're hoping that by providing this group of players ammunition, they can reach where we can't.

3) Marketing 101 says that people trust people, not companies. We'd like our chosen Menaphos Insiders to share the information in the way they want, and without any kind of bias/overhyping. It's more authentic and more 'believable'.

Hopefully that helps to explain it a little better. It is an experiment, and there's nothing to say this will be replicated again - but we'll look at what has happened after Menaphos comes out and work out the value of this initiative.

As you mentioned above, none of the information is going to be game-breaking; it's just something we wanted to try out."
