In our forum we do have a reputation system, and with one of the more recent software updates we also got a 'reward post' feature which lets mods award a post for being great content or helpful and optionally add a point & leave a message complimenting the user.
These awards are logged on their forum profiles so they have an area to show off.

I'm not a great fan of +/- reputation systems, but I'd be open to see how this thread develops :)

With comments, it's possible to find out if someone truly understood your suggestion. If you get a mere "No support" response, it's worth asking the question why they do not support it, and try to fire up a dialogue on how that "no support" can be turned into a "support".

With a simple vote system, it's not possible to do this. You will get a number of up/down votes with no comments as to why they've voted in that way. There's no way in telling if they've actually understood the suggestion, if they only support part of it, or if there's only one doubt in their mind which can be easily changed with a tweak to the suggestion.

Your objection is very similar to what 2_Tron brought up. What would you say about a stipulation that the upvote/downvote would be conditional on some sort of comment/argument backing it up?

I forgot to note that the upvotes/downvotes will be anonymous so that it doesn't turn into a popularity contest.

You know thats how it is on reddit right and you see how bad it still is?...

So just because you hide the names doesnt make it any more worthy of happening.

Even if you hide the numbers as well i just dont see a need for it.

I heard MAL, My Anime List, had this at one time yet even they got rid of it.

So that just goes to show how bad it truly is.

What if we made upvotes only visible to jmods? Forumers don't need to know how popular a suggestion is.

I mean forumers can already tell how popular a suggestion is by looking at the amount of comments in a thread and seeing the percentage that agree/disagree with the suggestion.

As an example, there was a suggestion about combining pie halves to make whole ones (OSRS content suggestions), and this thread gained over 100 responses. Looking at the responses, we can see >90% support it, so we can say this is a popular suggestion.

On the otherhand, threads that are on the >5th page with only 1-2 comments can be deduced as non-popular suggestions.

The functionality of the upvote/downvote system would be as a sort of 'executive summary' with regards to the support/opposition of the suggestion.

I don't know a lot about My Anime List, but there are sites like StackOverFlow which implement the like/dislike system and there is little to no toxicity there (at least nowhere near as much as reddit).

The reason I'm concerned with anonymity of users is because this prevents it from becoming a popularity contest among users , which would then allow a handful of people to control what's seen on the first page.

Now while reddit has this anonymity with regards to likes/dislikes, they still have the karma system, which allows profiles to be rated, and so it still remains a user popularity contest.

We won't have the problem of user popularity because the suggestion, as well as the current system won't provide any method for doing so.

likes & dislikes only serves as an extreme form of a claim, a claim where there's a shortage of important '
main arguments/useful evidence/supporting arguments
'.

likes & dislikes only serves as 'distortive/disruptive elements' to push discussions / debates off track.

Fair point. Perhaps we can include a stipulation that anyone who likes/dislikes a thread needs to provide some sort of comment/argument to go with it.

Thank you for finally suggesting this.
No support.

Not all popular comments are good
And not all unpopular comments are bad.

-Dislikes and few likes have a negative effect on people's mood. They physically feel bad if they don't get enough upvotes.

-"I am going to downvote your comment because you downvoted mine"

-I have seen users getting downvoted just for asking a question and/or not understanding a meme
I have witnessed the past, in The RuneScape Official Forums, where there were lots of pages of post counts of 'support / non-support', which literally did tear threads apart making threads started to discuss the amounts of support rather than discussing the subject at hand, what was the thread about.

The only way for this not to happen is to keep things the way they are.

So lets not make the forums any more "toxic" than they already are plz.

I mean they are "dead" for a reason and this might drive away what little life they have left.
