However, as noted within the content of chat threads the 'feeling' of belonging & community tends to exclusive rather than promoting that 'feeling' of belonging & community outward to new users who visit those types of threads. In some cases a chat thread is used more like a exclusive clan thread rather than a chat thread, which of course, would not be the purpose or design the chat thread.
I suppose a lot might depend on how the individual perceives it. When you see a group of people interacting who obviously know each other but do not know you, that could be seen either as an opportunity to get to know those people yourself and to discover a specific niche where you can feel that you do belong, or you can view those people as 'a clique' who would not want to take the time or trouble to welcome newcomers into their midst.
I've got to say though, I've not really been involved in any other chat thread for quite a long time, but when I have dipped my toes in now and then, I've not had the impression that my comments weren't welcome. Doesn't mean to say you're not right though, perhaps some chat threads are 'cliquey', or rather, some individuals who use those threads may try to steer it that way at least, but they don't need to be simply because they are chat threads. Personally, I have higher hopes for this thread and those who might frequent it, both currently and in the future. It's up to those who use it to make sure it stays open and welcoming, and if that's the attitude of the majority who do, I don't see a problem arising.
