Aeorox,
Ah! Will you be my new PA? lol. you seem to have your fingers on sorts of threads of scattered information! What a useful person you are! I wonder if they might slip in a few changes/new features too while they're fiddling about with the look of things. That would be nice. :D We've certainly been waiting for long enough!

Haha. Well I browse the forums and main website quite a bit, so when I see a chance for Q&As or other activities, I usually try to see if I can get myself involved. I read over the New Website Q&A a lot and found a lot of interesting info in that.

And yeah, I hope they might add an extra feature here or there while they're working on brining the forums inline with the new website :)

Winds,

I personally think Sookie's right. This thread is never going to be as fast moving and 'chatty' as say the chat threads in General and Rants for example, because the forum isn't visited as much anyway.

As a matter of interest, since you first expressed concerns about the change of focus, you've had seven response posts from various people (eight, including this) about the topic you raised. Even though the thread's in its early 'buzz' stage, it hasn't been hard to follow that discussion, or to find the previous posts by others about it. I think that situation is likely to continue, and that's good, but I also think it's good that those who would just like to pop by for a brief friendly exchange with some names that they recognise from the W&F forums, can feel free to do that too.

You mentioned my post from the old W&F discussion thread made before this thread was posted, that Chrisso quoted on page one, post four. Yes you're quite right that I express there my belief in the value of what I believe to be the unique character of the old thread, a place where the forum 'thinkers' can get together and discuss ideas without their posts being drowned in minutes, but I also expressed a desire that it could be more of an accessible thread to those who simply wish to have exchanges with their fellow forumers on a more casual level. Looking at how this new thread has developed so far, I think that balance is turning out to be just about right. Again though, it's early to tell, but no sense worrying too much before there's even a problem I'd have thought? :)

I do actually think that there is value too in those short, bantery types of posts, but for different reasons. They help to promote a sense of belonging, of community, and of being accepted whatever a person's style of posting is.

You know me, I sometimes take a whole post to say what I could have said in a couple of sentences (I'm working on that! Lol) and often get teased in a good natured way for that, which I don't mind at all. It's all about diversity really. We don't all have the same style of posting, or like to go into great depth of detail about certain issues. Some do, some don't. If we can let others know that the W&F forums are for all, not just the 'thinkers', that's got to be a good thing. We'll get a better representation of views from all of those who use the forums then and perhaps even encourage some new faces into W&F, because people won't feel obliged to have to write an essay to get their views across.

I'm actually laughing at myself as I'm writing this; it's ironic that my reply to you has turned more into an essay, ay? lol

I found it kind of ironic that a discussion about the thread becoming chatty actually triggered the first discussion... :P

@Tree, With declaring the previous W&F thread dead based on the idea that it was not often posted to and changing the format does appear to have also been done with the hopes that it would increase traffic to the forum. There is nothing wrong with trying to increase traffic to a slow forum but based on forum statistics, it would appear to be a long shot to think that a slow forum would be able to host a viable chat thread that would increase traffic to the forum though.

Post count to a forum is only one indicator in the overall statistical analytical process. To see only an increase in posts to just 'one' thread within the forum would not produce the desired effect of showing an increased traffic flow to the forum. A +/- traffic flow margin is not produced by only one indicator. Which puts me in agreement with Sookie as well regarding the pace of the forum.

The design and purpose of a chat type thread is to promote the 'feeling' of belonging and community that provides a venue for chat type banter. Chat threads are valuable to the health of a forum since they are usually glued so that an active chat thread post count increase will not disrupt the placement of subject threads in that forum. The chat thread also keeps that type of banter off of the subject threads. There is no disagreement that chat threads are not valuable.

However, as noted within the content of chat threads the 'feeling' of belonging & community tends to exclusive rather than promoting that 'feeling' of belonging & community outward to new users who visit those types of threads. In some cases a chat thread is used more like a exclusive clan thread rather than a chat thread, which of course, would not be the purpose or design the chat thread.

I guess we could try to set a time when we both are on so you can practice writing stuff like chit-type banter consisting of one or two lines. Heck, I'll even create a forum signature with four line lines of squigglyness if you think that might help. ;)

We now have the best FSRs on the forums. Nice.

Also, do note there were some lighthearted conversations on the previous thread as well. I have yet to see anyone seriously interested into turning this into a trash thread. Fun comments and chatting aren't bad, and there's nothing preventing a good discussion occurring (take note of the discussion on the previous few pages). I think there's nothing wrong with the threads direction or reality.

Perspicuity? Is that where you can set fires, like, with your mind?
Possibly you mean persipecunary - 'relating to a copy more authentic than the original'.

Anyway, I think the FSRs are great - even cromulent.
They've embiggened my view of the forums, which ive found rather depressing recently.

Well who knows? Worth a shot I'd say and nothing lost by trying it out, so far at least. :)

Maybe not. Hard to say. But if some are tempted to W&F to check out the chat thread, they may well cast their eyes over some other threads while they're at it I suppose, especially if they see some familiar names they recognise from the chat thread have posted.
