A "like" button is fine if it will reduce posts such as "this^." and "+1".

I fail to see how?

I mean considering it'll most likely not be enforced to use the "like system" or w/e, ppl would more than likely still do that.
I think it was meant hypothetically, not stating that it would guarantee such a result. While you're right, people will continue to do that because they're stubborn or whatever, but I'm sure there are those that'll just hit like and move on.

Unless they just want to farm post count, then yeah they'll take the time to just post "+1" instead.

Since Reddit's system was mentioned here, I'd like to say that I'm not a fan of Reddit's downvote feature, and I'd like to explain why. I often find that some of my own posts which contribute to the conversation in a thoughtful and respectful manner are downvoted for what I presume is a simple disagreement regarding the content.

Reddit outlines informal guidelines for the downvote feature, and this "reddiquette" is often ignored by users. Here's an example of their suggested reddiquette:

Please Don't

Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion.

Source: https://www.reddit.com/wiki/reddiquette

Granted, I understand that these are informal suggestions, but it's the intended purpose of the feature. This same behavior would naturally occur on the forums if a similar feature were implemented.

What I dislike about this feature is that it encourages me to either not post my opinion in fear that it will damage my formal Reddit reputation (Karma) or to modify my post to cater to the popular opinion just to maintain or gain reputation.

Here's an example for if this feature were to be implemented on the forums: Let's say I create a well-crafted, thoughtful post about changing a certain aspect of the game. I outline my reasoning, and I post respectfully to those who disagree with my suggestion. Let's assume this suggestion is unpopular with the community. It's only natural to assume that people will downvote my post(s); it happens to me frequently on Reddit. This would negatively affect any formal reputation system implemented with this feature (an equivalent of Karma).

I wouldn't mind an upvote or a like system, though.

I wouldn't mind a dislike feature if it were solely connected to the thread/idea and not the specific user.

In a contributing manner, sure. What does "+1" contribute to a thread above and beyond that of what a "Like" button would contribute?

If I agree with an idea, I try to come up with something more constructive than "+1". If I can't, either because I lack creativity that day or (quite simply) nothing more needs to be said, then this is where the like button would come in handy.

+1 ;)

On a more serious note, I would rather read constructive posts than a bunch of one word responses. "+1", "Support" and "Profiled" could all be replaced by this feature. No need for a dislike button though.

This is just me but, why should you worry about being down voted for personal reasons? Are you just not good with people showing simple disagreement to the point where you'd prefer their verbal disagreement? I don't care if people hate me or the things I suggest, the only opinions that matter are those thought through enough to convince Jagex, not the players.

Like I said previously, if they are down voting for personal reasons, it will show. If it is made reportable to forum help to misuse it, then do that. If it can prevent some bait posts, I don't see why not. If you are only worried about popularity and change your own posting out of fear of down votes, you worry about the wrong things. Unless your goal is Mod status.
Your opinions here can affect us all. Please post for the better

Down-voting is often is often done on a whim, because humans are humans, and some humans refuse to think before they act. Take this suggestion for example: I can see the merits to the idea including 'dislike'; however, it is a fact that the function continues to be abused on Reddit. It is impossible to enforce abuse of the system, because that is highly subjective and difficult to prove. Not to mention the additional load on top what can already be a taxing moderation role. Do I instantly hit 'dislike' on this thread because there are parts I disagree with? No, but there are some people who would.

...and Jagex tends to listen to the majority, unless the objective is to protect the game's integrity. People get passionate about certain subjects, sometimes to a point where it gets personal - such toxicity is not necessary. If you air an unpopular opinion in a constructive manner, you should not be down-voted; however, this happens on a regular basis on Reddit. If this started to happen to you on a regular basis, I think you would begin to care.

N.B. There are many good reasons some people choose not to use Reddit. Let's not scare them away from another platform which is currently open to them. ;)

Oh gosh I'm about to reveal my foruming age.... We had it at one time. There were a couple mittens on the left side of the forums where the vip badge is now. One a thumbs up and one a thumbs down. Jagex removed both as they said it wasn't an accurate indicator as to the quality of the thread or the posts for that matter.

So doubt we'll get it reinstated.
