Because every other sport besides hockey shares its name with its ball, it was inevitable that the name of the sport received the name of the ball.

Golf?

Tennis?
Rugby?
Squash?
Badminton?

Cricket
Hockey
Lacrosse

Oops, you said hockey :P

I understand why some people want to tip, and why raising the minimum in the U.S is far different than in smaller countries like Canada in Australia which is why it's so low. However..

..I find it absolutely revolting that waitresses and delivery drivers etc act like spoilt brats when you don't tip enough. They should be grateful people tip at all. These people accept jobs for the $3 an hour. That is what their labour is worth in a country absolutely brimming with unskilled labour and few suitable jobs. If their labour was actually worth more then the owner of the store would up prices in order to pay them that.

Mandatory tipping is a disgusting idea.

disgusting or not that is how America is run. Don't like it, don't come here. Did you know that people that need the tip get paid less than countries where tipping may not be necessary?

Unskilled labour in a country of 360 million is far different in one like Australia or Canada, whom have around 30 million and abundant natural resources to prop up the economy. I'm aware that is how America is, but it's a ridiculous custom. I'm not against tipping; I'm against mandatory tipping. If a 15% tip is mandatory then add 15% to all the prices.

Edit: Also I can assure you this wont stop me coming from America. I just wont tip when it's optional.

@other post claiming the owner would try to up profits instead of paying more

Exactly, he can't up prices without losing to other compitition. These people have absolutely no skills, and these jobs are not supposed to offer living wages. Their labour is near worthless when you consider how many people in the U.S are unemployed and have no real skills (liberal art degrees etc don't actually produce anything for the economy).

Why are Americans so picky? It seems whenever I see tourists they always ask for certain ingredients to be removed. Namely tomatos and onions. If so many people hate tomato and onions, why do American restraunts cook using them instead of adding them if requested? It seems it would be annoying to have every person ask for no tomato/onions.

I've noticed people from "the South" or the midwest seem to be far less picky. It's mostly Californians and East Coast people.

I tip what I feel like, and won't hesitate to hold out if service is crap. Chasing someone down for a tip won't get them to change their mind about it lol.

Of course there's a difference between eating at a restaurant with a bill that comes out to $220 range and ordering delivery late at night.

I can certainly understand tipping a delivery guy who has to drive on horribly maintained american roads, and visit run down neighborhoods. Someone who takes a plate a couple of meters? lol.

Edit: Not to mention if someone gives a delivery guy shit he has to deal with them on his own. If someone starts trouble in a restaurant they have the entire staff to help them settle it.

So yeah delivery people I can totally see as hard working and deserving of tips (not mandatory ones, though).

If waitresses and waiters were not working for tips , you can bet your service would not be as good as you want it to be. They work harder because they make their living off making their customers happy. Imagine if a waiter was not working for tips, but minimum wage. You can only imagine how much shittier the service would be.

On another note, if a waitress or waiter is making 15% tips, they are doing a shitty job in the first place. I waitress, and the girls who do not pull in 19-23% are pulled aside and spoken to. It is a service industry. You must work for your money.

And don't try and say that it is unskilled or that the people are under educated. 3 out of the 4 waitresses I work along side have a college degree. Their full time jobs do not pay a living wage. Now THAT is the problem with America.
