Football is not an appropriate name for soccer following the standards for proper sport naming, which state that it is best for the sport to be a combination of the fundamental feature of the sport and the word "ball". Following that protocol, it should be called goalball or netball. Calling it football would be as asinine as calling baseball batball or basketball hand-floorball.

The word for the sport Americans call football comes from a description of the ball, rather than a description of the sport. The ball was a foot in length, so naturally it was referred to as a football. Because every other sport besides hockey shares its name with its ball, it was inevitable that the name of the sport received the name of the ball.
