As a constant user of voice communication while played Runescape, my first thought was wow! This is so cool! However after a minute or two i decided to disagree with voice communication through Runescape. The potential of damage to the players, especially the younger ones, could be irreperable. People don't like being barraged ( not in the Runescape form) with trolls, annoyances, and flamers. This voice communication system would harm individuals who can't stand up for themselves or perhaps are too young to confront older and more experienced players. Just my thoughts.

Sounds like an amazing idea to me, let alone if it was programmed right! I seriously hope it is even though i do not have a mic because it would help those players who can hardly type fast enough and get 3 bubbles of text before finally replying to the first.
What i personally think would be helpful though, is that each player can set a list of languages they speak like:
This player's first language is: english
This player can also speak: spanish, German, etc.
maybe when right clicking a player and selecting something like "languages".
With that, if someone who speaks english adds someone whose first language is french let's say, he knows to expect to not understand everything and give him a chance.
of course this should come with the option to hide your languages from other players if someone judges he wants to keep that private (even though anyway he will be forced to communicate somehow)

Voice chat would be awesome! I used team speak 2 for a while with another game. It was a bit glitchy, but it's an old program, and it worked well enough. I also tried using Skype, but it kept trying to take audio from my TV tuner instead of my mic.
Anyway, being a web developer (I think you are at-least), I don't know if you know about the open source development in the container format know as OGG and the audio codec known as Vorbis, but you may want to check them out if you plan to create your own VOIP program. They are royalty free, and OGG is supposed to be an actual streaming format, as opposed to some other popular formats that are often used as if they were. Free is good when your dealing with the kind of large scale player base that RuneScape has.

I've never used voice chat while playing Runescape but have always thought it would be fun. I've even posted a suggestion for it from time to time.
I think the most fun would be if the chat functioned like chat does now, with new voices cropping up as you navigate the world. I mean built in voice would be great but having it function like public chat would just be option. I don't know if that's practical at this time but it would be awesome.
Now, one reason why I don't use voice currently is because I just don't like going through the process of loading yet another program on my somewhat slow computer and trying to get in touch with friends and such that use different programs. It would be far more convenient if RS just had it built in.
I wholeheartedly support voice chat and depending on the features and popularity of it would definitely consider paying extra for it.
You guys there at Jagex are really surprising me with what you're coming up with lately.

I think the poll should have had the ability to pick multiple options, since many of us have accounts on various chats instead of just 1, and use them for multiple reasons included in the poll. Also, I think if you were to make a RuneScape specific chat system, it would be extremely tough competition, since the poll says has an option stating it depends on cost and functions within the chat to interest people. Cost should not even be a question, there should not be a cost, considering we have programs that offer great service for free. If you want to compete against free service like that, you're going to find yourself short handed. It's a great idea but a tough market to argue with, but that's just my opinion.

Alot of people use skype to talk while playing runescape, i have been using skype to talk to people while pking, skilling, or just trying to buy things. Its alot for convent to talk to 6 people in a skype call while bryding then to type in "help me" on the clan chat interface when pking to call in your clan mates. Personally i belive that this change will make rs a better game to play, but also remember any type of language/profanity can be used on live chat with no barriers, and ethnic language problems younger children who dont know a second language.

I was thinking about this earlier.. as in going to suggest it :O but I didn't think it would happen..

I've already voted in the poll, but I do have a couple of concerns. If they have been answered already, I apologize for not thoroughly sifting through the rest of the posts.
1) Would voice chat be monitored in some way?
We can report players for offensive language, and the reports go to you all. However, would we be able to report another player for verbally being offensive to another player? If so, does that mean our conversations would be recorded for Jagex moderators to sift through as necessary?
2) Cost.
I noticed that you have neglected to mention the costs of such a feature. It could be free to all (doubtful), free to players who purchase membership (possible, but no longer free), or useable after purchasing the rights to use the feature. Another option, which I dread, is an increase in membership by x amount of money to cover the cost of the program, and that would allow the feature to be accessible to all accounts that have membership.
Maybe there is another option I have not considered, but if it does cost us something, I believe it would be easier and more efficient for us to continue using free programs, such as Skype or instant messengers.
Is this just in the planning stages at this point, or can someone answer these?
