Agent B MiB,
I'd suggest studying economics, and learning why merchants exist.
Merchants exist because they provide needed services.
Yes, there are dishonest merchants.
There are also drunk drivers. That doesn't mean driving is bad.
If merchants were not providing a wanted and needed service, they could not make any money at all.
Basically, what merchants do is provide goods and services where and when people want them. To do this, they gather the goods and services from their sources, stock them as needed, and make them available at the buyers' convenience. They get paid for that service in the form of a markup on the goods and services.
In the old RS, one of the primary functions of merchants was to buy small quantities of items from resource-gatherers at lower prices, combine them into large quantities, and sell them to skillers at higher prices. This saved skillers hours of buying small quantities from large numbers of players. The time saved in getting a large quantity of the item all at once was worth the extra paid for those items.
Legitimate GE merchants provide the service of making sure there is a buyer any time a seller wants to sell an item, and making sure there is a seller any time a buyer wants to buy an item. The markup the merchant receives is payment for providing that constant flow of buyers and sellers, and for keeping the market in various items fluid.
As a byproduct of this, merchants help stabilize prices on the GE. They aim to buy when prices are low, and sell when prices are high, thus smoothing out what would otherwise be much wider price swings.
There are many other services merchants provide.
Once free trade comes back, the services merchants can provide will be greatly expanded.
That will be better for all players--even for players who don't understand economics and rant about those terrible, selfish merchants. :P

still cant believe some of you are debating over this. its coming back so whats to argue about. knowing that botting is against the rules im kind of glad there are some in the game. it makes prices cheaper on alot of things for us skillers. i couldnt imagine what prices would be on some items if there werent botters doing it. thats why it was so hard to get 99s in rs classic and when rs2 first came out. but then again i think it was more of an accomplishment when you did get them as of todays its like meh.

oh well flame on yall hope i dont cross any of you in the wildy =]

grease, they'll be calculated in exactly the same way they are now.
Jagex can still see how every single trade went and the game works out the average price an item sells for every time someone trades it for something else. it is really simple.
Having free trade will not change the way market prices are worked out, the market price indicator was brought out before free trade was taken away and it worked absolutely fine back then.

Mystic--
As one who appreciates irony/sarcasm I enjoyed your recent post employing it to great effect (no sarcasm intended).
My objection to unlimited trade is entirely botting related, not at all merchanting related, though I have said that IF unlimiting trade stops price manipulators I will be very happy.
My objection to the old wildy portion is entirely related to being forced to associate with the largely antisocial class of players attracted to it. And I see you have, less judgementally perhaps, expressed similar views of PKers in posts after I gave up on this thread. I have said that if everything us non-virtual-murderers need to play the game is moved out of the wild, I have no strong objection to that portion of the plan. Though in that case, it seems simpler to just make PVP worlds follow old wildy rules, as many have suggested.
And, as has been restated recently, if they had simply said, "we're bringing back old wild and free trade" I would have still had the previously stated objections, but they would have eliminated any option for me to "rant," as you imply, about the votes. I simply resent being scammed and lied to. As a reasonable person I have to believe if you considered our stated objections to the methodologies used in the two votes, you would have to conclude they were designed to produce a desired result. If 51% voted "yes" then fine; "yes" wins. But just don't insult our intelligence by claiming that 91% of players want PKing and increased botting, as many supporters and seemingly Jagex do.
As I and others pointed out, isn't it interesting how the poll archives disappeared just when it would be handy to point out the old poll results showing how few people enjoyed PKing?
