I dont know if its because its on my tool belt or on the ground at the barrows but you DONT need a spade
Right click the spades on the barrow you want to enter and you get the dig option and you are in, saving 1 space

It's good to bring a combat potion and use melee on Karil and Ahrim, since it's very cheap and the boosts are quite decent.
If you can, bring a Polypore staff since it's by far one of the most best magic weapons to use for the melee barrows brothers and it also works well on Karil too. Another alternative is using Slayer Dart spell with a Slayer's staff or a Staff of light.
The best way to predict the future is to create it.

I've been barrowing A lot and I wanna share my experience with you guys.
I found out that the best gear and cheapest for lower levels are:
Helm: Neitz helm
Amulet: Glory
Body: Black d'hide
Legs: Black dhide
Boots: Dragon boots/snakeskin boots
Ring: Ring of wealth (RoW)
Gloves/bracelet: Best RFD gloves/Regen/combat bracelet.
Weapon: If you can afford polypore staff, then do so, otherwise slayer staff with slayer darts. Whip and a spec weapon for Karil and a crossbow/bow for Ahrim.
Iventory setup:
Spade ( no longer needed)
5-6 prayer potions
10-15 monkfishes
Emergency tele
High-level setup:
With this setup, you should do over 50-100 chests/trip or even higher if you doing this right.
(melee brothers)
Helm: Virtus/ahrim hood/Void
Amulet: Arcane steam/blast/pulse necklacke
Body: Virtus/ahrim/Void
Legs: Virtus/ahrim/Void
Ring: Berserker/RoW
Boots: Infinity boots.
Gloves: Best RFD gloves.
Weapons: Polypore staff with Ice barrage/Blitz runes. (Freeze with ancient and kill with polypore staff.)
For karil only.
Helm: Torva/Bandos/Guthan
Amulet: Fury
Body: Torva/bandos/guthan
Legs: Torva/ Bandos/Guthan
Ring: Berserker/ RoW
Gloves: Best RFD gloves.
Boots: Infinity boots.
Weapons: Rapier/Whip
Spec weapon: Dclaws (slash)
For Ahrim only:
Helm: Pernix/Karil
Amulet: Fury
Body: Pernix/Karil
Legs: Pernix /karil
Ring: Berserker/RoW
Gloves: Best RFD
Weapons: Zaryte bow/ Karil's crossbow with bolt racks.
Take out the melee brothers first, Dharok > Guthan > Torag > Verac then switch your gear to Karil and take out him and Switch to your ahrim Gear and take out him.
Now the dig-down. When you have taken out all of them (its one left) then go down, find chest room when you come to the puzzle, use a low freeze spell on the creature which is attacking you and then solve the puzzle. Now if it's a melee brother which appear when you open the chest, just hide yourself behind the torch and take him out. If it is karil/Ahrim, take out with dclaws/Karil crossbow.

#1. Polypore staff is a very good, cheap magic attack for the 4 melee brothers (Verac,Dharok,Torag, and Guthans)
#2. Ring of wealth helps with drops from the chest.
#3. A Whip/Rapier/Cls will work fine for Ahrims and Karils
#4. If you have access to the "kharill (i know i spelled it wrong ;d) in your house, that is a very good option to get back quickly to barrows, Or if you have ancient magicks, You can bring Blood and Law runes to teleport to Kharill (level 76/77 Magic Required)
#5. Take advantage of Double loots weeks/weekends when they come!
Note : This Armour is geared towards lower leveled players.
#6. Armour : Best to worst
Helm : Neitiznot, Verac's helm, Seers
Cape : God Cape, Ardounge Cloak, Firecape
Amulet : Fury, Glory, Power
Staff : Polypore, If you have 95+ Magic Staff of light with Fire Surge is also good, yet expensive.
Top : Ahrims Robetop, Mystic Robetop
Shield : Mages Book, God Book (All 4 pages a.k.a. Full is good bonus')
Bottom : Ahrims RobeBottom, Mystic RobeBottom
Gloves : Barrows gloves, Dragon, Rune, Adamant, Mystic gloves
Boots : Infinity, Climbing, Dragon
Ring : Wealth, Life,
***Very important, Once you enter the dungeon on your way to the chest, Figure out your position (North,South,East,West) and then type it in your chatbox e.g. "Nw, Ne, Sw, Se"***
P.S. Good Luck at Barrows =p

#1: Start off with killing Dharok - your prayers won't be drained yet, and you don't want them to be - especially if he's low at health. I'd suggest taking either Guthan or Karil then. Remember not to let them drain your prayers to null. Though I've seen words you don't need prayers for Guthan, I advise anyone but a true tank to use them anyway. Then you take Ahrim (remember that all stat-lowering specials hit through prayers), and Torag. When fighting Torag you basically do not replenish prayer points, because:
a) he's rather weak.
b) the next one is... Verac, who hits through prayers.
And yes, this Verac is tough. I'd suggest eating a lot and keeping in mind he can sometimes hit over 250. So try not to let him bring your health below, say, 500.
#2: Brother's weaknesses:
-Dharok: Magic/Ranged
-Guthan: Magic
-Karil: Magic/Melee
-Ahrim: Ranged/Melee
-Torag: Magic
-Verac: Magic
