In answer to Alaz:

"1 - Did you play through the events of the book on your RuneScape character, ie. walk the same paths, in order to ensure the details fit with the game (to an extent)?"

Yes I did. In fact the very idea of the Ring of Life being used to start the story off came to me after my game character was killed by a Black Knight on Ice Mountain and I forgot I was wearing it! When I found myself in Falador I thought that could be a great beginning from the perspective of the Knights.

In answer to Moe is 4210:

"Do you base your story on real RuneScape lore and history, and do your books actually reflect real lore/story in the actual game? Or is it just 'made up'?"

RuneScape lore is very important to the books as it has to tie in with what people experience in game and to what they know.

In answer to Jikkir Jay:

"Do/Did you play the game before hand? If so, for how long?"

I have played RuneScape since mid 2006. I became a member at the end of that year and started writing the book in 2007.

In answer to Sir Bhuler (a very good name):

"Hello. I have read Betrayal at Falador 3 times now and I still love it. I was just wondering if it really would be worth buying the revised copy or just sticking with my original copy? Oh and any thing you can leak out about when the second book might come out? Or some characters maybe? Hehe"

The hardback version was essentially an in-house production edited by the Jagex staff and myself. The Titan book has had the benefit of a professional publishing house and all their resources behind it so whilst the story itself is the same, the book has been tightened up. It would be great to see what people think of the differences though.

In answer to Mog:

"Hello Mr. Church,

I own a copy of your first book and have lent it out several times so others may get an opportunity to experience RuneScape, outside of the game.

My question, however, is focused on Jagex's aim at focusing the game's demograph away from children and towards more mature players (or to simply attract older players, in addition to maintaining a youth friendly game). I think a book however may have more freedom in this ability; to draw the attention of this older demograph. What are your opinions on this and your present book, and will your next book reflect a target audience of more mature readers?"

Good question Mog and one which I have thought long and hard on. The books are aimed to be accessible from a range of age groups, however it has to be 'gritty' and dark enough to ensure there is real danger to the characters and that the evil in the world is really that. Betrayal has some dark moments, yet these are dealt with in an ambiguous way so are not too explicit. The second book will be darker than the first . . . (I think the name is a bit of a giveaway in what way!)

In answer to Blackxp:

"My question for you, Mr. Church is...

When you roleplay, play video games, develop video games, write, etc. What kind of characters do you like like to create, play as, etc?

To make things simple. I will ask using the DnD scheme."

I usually go for a chaotic good character. I had an elf ranger when I was at school (a long time ago and not in a galaxy far far away) in D&D (called Legolas for some reason). After a time I did vary the PC though and even tried playing a villain, but that ended up being a short game as the DM provided characters even worse than we were.

In answer to Toyboy51:

"Will you be making another RS book? A sequel or so?"

There is a sequel planned for Betrayal. If you have read it you will know where that book ends and which characters are still around for another.

The title is "Return to Canifis" so it should be a slight give away.

In answer to Towards Zero:

"will you write another runescape novel? when is the next runescape novel coming out? also, which is your favorite writer? whats ur biggest inspiration? do you have a website where we can learn more about you and other works of yours?"

The sequel is scheduled for a release in March 2011. My favorite writer is an impossible question to answer: Patrick O'Brian was a good one, then George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman series was excellent - so much so that it ended up getting me interested in history.
