Halo Man 311:

"1: What mostly inspired you to make a book based off of Runescape?"

I thought it would act as a great introduction to the world of RuneScape if you could pick up a novel that would essentially lay out the politics and religions of the world in an exciting adventure. I have read lots of books myself over the years, and the success of previous fantasy novels based on game worlds convinced me there would be an interest for them.

Hi A Thorondor:

"1) To appeal to all kinds of Runescape fans it must appeal to a lot of different people. Old, young, male, female and from all kinds of countries and cultures. How did you take this into account when writing the book?
Do you think there are universal, 'core'-things that make a book good?"

Yes this is something we had to seriously consider. I made the darker aspects of the book deliberately amiguous so as not to be too explicit in its descrtiptions but at the same time I didn't try to hide the evil that the villains committed. It is important that readers appreciate that the villains are suitably villainous.

Your second query is very interesting indeed. I am just reading 'The Saga of the Earls of Orkeny' at the moment which is one of the Icelandic sagas of the Viking's in Scotland. Written/told over 800 years ago, the relationships between the characters are still as relevant then as today.

TS Krampell:

"4. What part of the book did you enjoy writing the most?"

It was the ending of the first book where everything came together. I would finish the evening's work on a high feeling like I had fought in a battle myself!

Trainer Yddet:

"Also Is this book going to be in USA stores like Barns and Noble and Borders?"

I think it will be in Barnes and Noble and Borders in the USA. In the UK it will be available from the 22nd October in WHSmiths and Waterstones I believe.

Hi *iex:

"What do you base your stories off of? Sure there's RuneScape but that's not necessarily where you get all of your ideas now is it so, tell us (me) where do you get the ideas (Not including RS) that you incorporate into your stories (books/novels/prose/etc)"

Thanks for the feedback. The main thing is that the characters relate to the audience in some way and that their circumstances elicit a response. Essentially, Betrayal is a war story with each person doing their part.

"If you could go back in time to where you started writing Betrayal at Falador and leave a small note to yourself, what would it say?"

Probably concentrate on fewer characters in a point of view manner to build on them in greater depth. This is a view that has been carried over to the second novel and I for one think it's better for it.

Laaniyah:

"Did you like writing the book as much as I enjoyed reading the first chapter?"

Yes I did thank you very much. 1000 words a day keeps things moving and if you don't enjoy it you are probably doing something amiss.

Galahad Sir:

"1. Do you think it's easier or harder to write about an established world such as Runescape, compared to being completely free to invent everything yourself? On the one hand I think it would be helpful to have the characters, settings, back stories and history already thought out, and everyone who contributes to various "fan-fiction" websites takes advantage of this. On the other hand, being "official" means you're restricted somewhat in what you can write about - you can't massively contradict any of the existing or future themes of the Runescape game, which may make it harder to express your themes and ideas. Would you say it's a blessing or a curse?"

There are pros and cons. The pros are that the lore is already in place, and the cons are basically the same. As the books are based before the PC enters the game however it gives a bit of time for the in game lore to assert itself.

Hazeel Rises:

"Will Theodore develop more (character and strength-wise)?"

(Not sure if I should tell a worshiper of Zam about a Knight of Falador!)

Theodore is a main character in the sequel so he will develop in many ways - he will still find his ideals are hard to live up to however.

Lrb1996:

"1. Will the second book reveal a bit more of Garth's/Jerrod's history?
2. Will the second book start off before, during or after the time Theodore, Ebenezer, Doric, Castimir and Kara-Meir are set to meet in Varrock?"

It is called Return to Canifis so that's a possible assumption. You'll have to see.
It kicks off 6 months after the first book as the heroes make their way to Varrock.
