I'd like to add my two cents to the mix. I was excited to see the winning entries for the NIS system, as I've played other games, like World of Warcraft, where interface design and organization is paramount to good playing (your skills can take a hit if using a bad design, but be boosted if using a well-organized one). I've spent many hours looking up interface designs when shaping my own interface for these games, so I've come to recognize what works and what doesn't. Upon clicking the post, I'll admit I was rather...disappointed. There must've been many entries (hundreds, I imagine), and I'm honestly surprised that those two were considered the best out of all of them. For interfaces, a minimalist, uncluttered, simple design rules the day, hands down. While I think Bresmine's design did trump the winner's, it still takes up a significant portion of the screen.
To critique TechEngineer's layout, for me it fails to be effective because the chat tabs take up the whole left side of the screen. There's no reason that that much chat text is typed in all chats at once, that you'd need all 4 open at the same time. I'd far prefer to take the mere seconds to click on a chat tab to see what else is going on, and save the precious screen space, then have all 4 open at once. The only situation in which I might actually use TechEngineer's layout is if I were GE standing (loafing), and simply chatting (and perhaps AFK skilling at the same time).
The runner-up's is more successful than TechEngineer's, and it actually reminds me of an early interface setup I ran when I played WoW. But then my interface changed to be less cluttered and chock full when I started searching for better alternatives. Ones that sort crucial aspects of the interface into different areas of the screen, instead of bunching it together.
I saw Yaralda's design, and I believe that it is a far better, all-around useful, aesthetically-pleasing design. I saved it so I can reference it when making mine.
