Campfire Chat Answers

Hi all!

With both the HTML5 & NIS update in Beta, we thought this would be an excellent time for you to ask the JMods questions regarding these incredibly awesome updates.

Without further ado, I introduce to you not one, not two, not three but four Developers!

Mod Conor

I’m Conor Senior Project Manager on RuneScape. While I manage a large variety of projects and updates my main focus is Engine, tech and tools. My work involves interacting with people in every area of the business to identify what needs to be done and when to get everything together to release to players on time
I played games all my life and its fantastic getting content into the hands of players to see what they do with it.

So ask me anything from how we decide what to do next to the point we get it to the players and I’ll do my best to give you a sensible answer.

Mod Brain

My name is Mod Brain (or Ingo in RL) and I manage the QA team for Runescape here at Jagex.
I joined Jagex in 2012 and already saw the Evolution of Combat from beta through to release. My team has been super busy lately, not only testing the new and upcoming content but also focusing heavily on the HTML5 client and the exciting New Interface System, that is now in Alpha.

I recently unlocked the last region in Player owned Ports and now work on getting the last scroll pieces together for my shiny new Melee and Magic Armour sets from Ports! When not playing Runescape in my spare time, I will most likely spend time on my Console or PC shooting things that are undead, or alien, or …well anything really.

Mod Chris E

I've worked at Jagex since 2004 as in many roles, from QA, Game Engine, and others through to my position now as Innovation lead. For the past year and a bit I've been developing, with a lot of assistance from the rest of the team, the HTML5 development platform and game client.

We've been focussing on removing our historical dependence on Java because of its declining market share and security problems. I'm happy to answer any questions you have on the new technology we're using, what our plans are for it in the future and any problems you've been having with the beta.

Mod Z

I’m Jose Pinhao, Mod Z, and I’m a Content Developer on Runescape. Most of my work involves building new interfaces and improving older ones, fixing issues with the game, and have worked amongst other things on the Make-X rework last year, and currently on the New Interface System for RS3.
I absolutely love getting deep into hard to solve issues, which feel like a good puzzle to me, and building systems that can be used by the content team to deliver you progressively better updates.
I’m looking forward to chat with you all and hopefully answering all of your burning questions!

Mod Jane

Mod Rocket

As before, we'll be here ensuring they are fed, watered and unable to escape!
Should you have any questions for me, I'll be only too happy to answer them. :)

FAQ

  • Where can I ask my questions?
You can ask your questions in the dedicated thread that you can find here .

  • Can I ask my question in this thread instead?
Unfortunately no, you will have to use the thread mentioned above for all your questions. That thread will be opened just before the Campfire is due to start. I'm afraid that any questions asked in this thread will go unanswered.

  • Where will the Live Forum Campfire take place?
Right here in the General Forum.

Let's make a start! I'll be answering questions mostly about the HTML5 beta.

You guys have done an amazing job so far - Well done!

- It’s still early days in the HTML5 and NIS Beta, so certain parts of the game still aren’t implemented. What features can we expect to be added in the future?
- How many Bug Reports do you receive on a daily basis (from the HTML5 and NIS Beta)?
- How long has the HTML5 Client been under development for?

Thanks in advance!

- From an HTML5 point of view, we'll be adding in a new world map system, new graphical effects and options, streamed high quality music and a few other surprises...
- We receive bug reports automatically if your client crashes, which is what we mostly work on for critical bugs. We get a few hundred of these a day at the moment.
- I started the project early in 2012 and we've gradually added people to the team over the last 9 months or so.

My computer doesn't have the best of specs, but I really wanna try out the new interface and html5, could you tell me when you'll let everyone get on it? (:

While we don't have a set date yet when we will open it up further, we want to improve performance further and do more bug fixes, to ensure it will also run better on lower spec PC's, like yours!

Technical:
-Will the 0.6 second Game Tick be lowered significantly (to about 50ms)?
-Will Movement be smoothed to a point that it feels almost or completely like free movement (NO WASD!)?
-Will the HTML5 client start using a 400-900 MB Cache folder (Local Storage)?

- No it won't. We'd have to rebuilt 10 years worth of game content (over 2 million lines of RuneScript) to handle diferent timings.
- We tested smooth movement during the development and weren't happy with the way it played. At the moment we don't have any significant plans to update this for RS3.
- The HTML5 client already uses local storage to cache game data and will use several hundred MB of storage is you visit lots of areas of the game.

Camera view at sky

I know that the game has been designed to be looked at from above, personally I wouldn't mind to see some missing graphics. If it'd bother me I'd turn the cam down.

You know how the game camera sometimes has a restricted movement in certain locations? Could you not adjust these restrictions for areas outside of cities and villages so we can look up? Then you'd only have to update the vegetation.

Or perhaps allow the game cam to be moved up everywhere but apply a 'ceiling' to cities, villages and minigames, so the camera there cannot look all the way up.
Remove the camera restrictions within cities and villages in phases, when you've had the chance to review these. But allow the camera more control in the open areas.

We are looking at the camera movement daily and some of this has already started in the NIS Alpha.

As you have pointed out the game has been designed with a down facing camera so we will need to do some work to bring everything up to scratch. With all the content in the game this is a big job so expect changes over time

We are putting the sky in, we would like you to be able to see it

Java:
-Will the Java client get Multi-Core support?

* Overall I think that the Java client can also make better use of our computers hardware. If we could use our GPU better, have Multi-core support and allocate more RAM to Java.... would the java version get any of HTML5 features like the Real-Time Shadows and Increased Draw Distance?

- We never got it working well enough to make it worth releasing, sorry :(
* While there's no fundamental reason the Java engine couldn't do those things, we chose to put our effort into developing a new engine in HTML5, rather than redeveloping the Java one. We will back port some of the essential features to Java as time goes on, but it will not be the focus of development for new features.

When will people like me who have tested out HTML5 Beta extensively get an option to choose to beta test the Interface Alpha as well? -dx

Both, the Beta and the Alpha are separate and participants have been selected separately with different requirements we selected for this.
No need to worry though, at some point we will get everyone to test both in an open beta!

1. Is the orb of oculus going to be available in the HTML5 beta?
2. Could anti-aliasing possibly be 'fixed' in HTML5? My graphics card (I think it's that o_O) can't enable it, and I'd love to be able to use it on this computer - not sure if it's possible in HTML5 ;_;?

1. We hope to release either it, or something a little more powerful during the beta.
2. HTML5 uses a different sort of anti aliasing (FXAA) to the Java client which should work on all cards.

Hey, this is one of the first discussions I'm privileged to take part in. for starters, I wanted to know if the bug report system currently available in the alpha and beta would be released in the live game. It makes reporting simple bugs that need fixed (esp graphical glitches and the like) much more likely to be reported.

yes, that is the plan! ;)

Is it true that you are planning on adding day/night cycles and dynamic weather?

Also, is there any news on improving Linux compatibility and maybe future support for mobile devices?

- No day or night cycle beyond the current different environment settings across areas.
- As far as we're aware both the Java client and HTML5 client work well on Linux. We test each release on Ubuntu. Mobile device support will improve under HTML5 as time goes on.
