† Asgarnia: The Dragon Wars †

Good morning. It is with great sadness that I announce my imminent departure from Runescape Roleplay. The last several years have been very enjoyable, and I take with me many happy memories of our time together. In those several years, we have all grown as human beings and as writers. Many who have been here as long as I will recall the time we spent here writing and playing fondly enough. Yet that time soon approaches its end. Nothing can last forever, and therefore all things and experiences, even good ones, must eventually come to an end. I fully recognize that I have not been as active in Asgarnia or on World 42 as a good leader should be, and so I think this is a good enough time to signal the end of my involvement in it.

As this is one last public address to you, the community, and as my tongue is no longer held taut by public opinion, I feel compelled to tell you my honest opinion on certain relevant community issues, past and present. These opinions I have gathered over the years. Some were gathered after I succeeded in roleplay, others after I made mistakes. How you as community members will interpret the opinions is ultimately up to you.

First, the division in our community is in my eyes the greatest tool with which to prosper. It is true that too much division led us to the brink of collapse more than once. It is also true that a suitable system of checks and balances must exist so that one can avoid becoming too arrogant. In my opinion, however, division among the majority allows one person to rise to power by uniting men and women with common interests. With that power comes the opportunity to create and to destroy. If you are benevolent and wish to lead, remember both the good and the bad consequences of your actions when you gain and hold power.
All that for a pile of bricks.

Second, Discord is not a suitable medium for adults to have conversation in a civilized manner, in my eyes. The internet and its many social media outlets have led to great and beautiful occurences, but verbal abuse is not among them. I associate the two. Integrity and professionalism are more valuable than Gielinor's weight in gold. It is not worth anything to debase yourself with pettiness beyond what we have already achieved together. If you are benevolent and wish to lead, mind your tongue and your keyboard.

Third, blacklists had their use and should never have been removed, in my opinion. There exists a theory that in order to punish wrongdoers less often, one has to punish more severely. I ascribe to that theory. One warning is enough. You are adults. If you are benevolent and wish to lead, embrace discipline and its long-term benefits.

Fourth, in my view the only way this community will recover from its downward spiral is with strong leadership. A group that unites with a common goal in mind and dedicates time, charisma, energy, and intellect to achieve that goal is more powerful than any single leader. I have some charisma, a modest amount of intellect, some letters after my name, but not nearly enough time to fix you, my beloved community. If you are benevolent and you wish to lead, find a group to aid you.

Fifth, if you think kindness is a weakness, you may be strong, but you will never be a good leader. It is far easier to shoot a man than it is to thank them or hug them. The former requires a firearm, ammunition, aim, and an able finger. The latter requires you to humble yourself and love others. It also yields a much more rewarding harvest than any of the consequences present when you shoot a man. If you are benevolent and you wish to lead, never forget that love is more powerful than hate.
All that for a pile of bricks.

Sixth, the Sicarius were not evil, but they were not good either. Let the memory of the organization, the leadership, and the things it did slowly rot away, until nothing is left but a few mentions of the name. Most of its current and former members deserve better. The rank and file were good people, loyal to a fault. If you are benevolent and you wish to lead, stop blaming the others for the faults in the world.

I leave these six opinions for you to read at any time you wish. You may respond in any way you wish, on this thread. I am eager to read your thoughts as twilight comes to my time on World 42. I will host one last roleplay this Saturday, at 5pm EST, at Daemonheim, to conclude the Dragon Wars. It will be based upon the cancelled event from earlier this month. I hope to see you there. I love spending time with you.

Last I leave you with these words, spoken long ago by a person who possessed leadership abilities far in excess of anything I have ever mustered.

"Do not lament my fate; the only reason I have allowed myself to survive was so that I could further serve our glory. I want to write down the great deeds which we have done together. Adieu, my children! Would that I could press you all to my heart. Let me at least embrace your standard."

† The Dragon Wars: Part Three: The Death of Volon †

8 Novtumber, Sixth Age

I write the last entry to this diary, for the time being. As I pen this entry, a party of scouts, knights, and adventurers join forces to slay the dragon Volon in his lair at Daemonheim. I will lead them in battle. Perhaps when this is all over, Asgarnia may return to peace, and rebuild from the ruins left by the most recent battle of Falador. The destruction of Paradise must allow us the opportunity to build something better. But what?

I grow tired now. The candle flame that is my life begins to wane. If I do not survive this battle, I will entrust my last will and testament to the most noble of warriors of our age. Whoever that may be, he or she will surely show my people the path forward. As for myself, I would be satisfied if my people were at last safe from terror. Then perhaps I may rest in the flower garden of my ancestors.

Jane Grey's diary was found among her other belongings when rumors of her death at the Battle of Daemonheim reached Asgarnia. At the forefront of it all was Jacob Delvar, a once-Kandar knight who had joined forces with the Grey in the name of defeating Volon and all the dragons in his employ. He came one day, into Asgarnia, bearing the last will and testament of Jane Grey, along with House Grey's signet ring. He would be king now, if he wished it.

As for Jane, much of the rumors surrounding her death were just that; rumor. Whether or not she was truly gone forever was hard to tell. But, as the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, the memory of her deeds slowly faded away.

One morning, however, the people of Falador awoke to find that a new marble statue had joined the others in Falador park. The statue depicted a familiar woman, and underneath, the inscription:

BEHOLD THE ARMOR-CLAD RACE OF ASGARNIANS: THE CONQUERORS OF THE WORLD. MAY THEY BE FOREVER ENSHRINED IN GLORY.

The former queen was most certainly dead.

THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF LADY JANE GREY,

FOR THE EYES OF ALL ASGARNIAN PEOPLE AND THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD

To the People of Asgarnia,

I leave my entire family fortune, so that they may use it strictly to rebuild their ruined cities, towns, and eventually, their lives. It has been accumulated in the amount of several million ounces of gold. To assure this is done, architects, farmers, and builders across the world have been contracted and upon my death are to be paid for services rendered to the people. First the city of Falador is to be rebuilt of white, sound stone, to set an example for the entire world. The rest will eventually follow.

To the knight Jacob Delvar,

I leave the crown of my forefathers. You will one day wear that, and be proclaimed King of All Asgarnia. Treasure that responsibility. Respect the burden. It is heavier than it looks.

To my daughter Fiore Grey,

I leave my love, and respect. These are worth more than any other gifts I have to offer. May you find happiness in this life and the next.

To my enemies,

I leave a statue in Falador park. To tear it down you will have to tear down all that I represent within yourself. If you truly find me so detestable, perhaps one day you will. If you treasure humanity and respect others, however, perhaps you shall leave it where it stands.

Thus end my worldly possessions which are mine by right of God to give. My personal belongings I take with me into the next life. My sword, armor, sceptre and globus cruciger I earned. You must earn yours, as well. Let this Will be proclaimed across the entire world to let all know that Jane Grey left her worldly possessions to her beloved citizens. At last, I take my exit from the stage. I found Falador a city of ruins. I leave it to you of marble.

Signed,

Lady Jane Grey
