Well, I see your issues with just jumping in and freelancing, I'm going to run down certain groups you might be interested in:
The Wizard's Tower: Magic roleplay is always interesting and the Tower is active every day (plus Rivendell has a nice face)
The Kingdom of Asgarnia: Lovely team and big ideas on the way for this roleplay. (Just ignore Rhy's bad jokes)
The Emirate of Al Kharid: Their leader, K9 is an incredibly enthusiastic guy when it comes to roleplay, new stuff has come up so I'm sure its roleplay and plots for all.
The Kingdom of Misthalin: I know from first hand experience that Stelly, the leader, is queen when it comes to roleplay plots.
The Kingdom of Kandarin: Take note of plotlines in this roleplay group, there's a different variety of roleplayer in Kandarin's team, from fantasy nuts to realism fans, you can enjoy yourself here.
A Crown of Fire: If you want a more military based roleplay to develop your skills, this roleplay is great. The leader, Role-Player hasn't disappointed me when it comes to plotlines.
The Fremennik: Simply good roleplay. Lots of nice people and interesting ideas. So good that Mod Mark has joined in with them (w00ters out)
Sophanem - Martial Law: A new roleplay, but its in the safe and wonderful hands of our own Kex, lots of interest will pop up soon, who knows? You could help develop this roleplay.
