Continuing their journey south through the air, they soon spotted the cave they had been searching for, landing nearby to conduct a thorough investigation. At this juncture, they decided to pause their expedition, leaving the tale at this suspenseful moment. (We will continue with the other half of the group.)

Just Deserts part 2

(We return to the other group's story)

While some of the group stayed outside to watch, the others entered the mountain and found the renegade. After some convincing Levon told them what he had found that led to his departure from Aniagert. He offered the supposedly forbidden text to the party to decipher, although without their resident inventor only half of the text could be understood. When they returned to Runespring they received a message from Maximus informing them that the port was blocked by the magical storms and that they should make their way to Dwemdrop.

Where Babel Fell

When the group reached Dwemdrop, they found out that someone had been arrested already for the contamination of the local water supply. But upon speaking with the supposed ne'er-do-well it became clear that he had nothing to do with the incident. So at the advisement of their mechmer guide, the party ventured below the already underground city to find some clues. There a ruined tower was found with a mysterious waterfall arcing upward from the nearby seawater into the ceiling of the cavern. Some investigation uncovered that some sort of magic was being used the funnel the water upward to potentially fill the lake in Dwemdrop.

The adventurers found the interior of the tower coated in copious amounts of salt, as well as a pair of devices interacting with the water. One brought the water up, while the other should have removed the salt from the water before sending it further. After reactivating the second device, the salt came to life and attacked the party as a salt elemental. But they soon discovered something or someone was trapped within the salty scoundrel. With some hard work, the salt was removed from the individual and shoved into the rushing water. This person was a being made of pure electricity who introduce himself as Coulomb, who explained his predicament with the salt coming to life. With the device active again and being fine-tuned by Coulomb, the group returned to the surface to report their findings to Councilor Ingot, who had just returned from Aniagert.

The revelations of what hid beneath the city were of interest the elder, but were not as much a surprise to him. Ingot told the party of Maximus's desire to send them to the Arbormer settlement of Mechbios to help with their on-going problem, which the group felt was an attempt by the priest to distract them. They agreed to go, however, but asked Ingot to examine the blueprints they received from Levon, which the latter agreed to.

The Lion Wakes Tonight

The group awakened the next day to speak with Ingot on what he had uncovered about the blueprints. On the way there, they met the accused knight, Tavid, who informed them of Maximus's attire when he first arrived on the island: that of a prison uniform. With this information they soon spoke with Ingot, who revealed that the blueprints are for some kind of power conduit to empower someone. The party theorized that it was likely as a means to give Maximus more power. Done with their catch up in Dwemdrop, they boarded the ship and set sail for Mechbios.

Upon arrival they were greeted by a group of Arbormer who were on edge due to something in the forest. Upon hear the roar of a lion, the group came to sense the danger and fled to the treetops to meet with the leader of Mechbios, the sentient Elder Tree Prime. It requested that they help calm its friend Takavor who had gone into a rage for some unknown reason. Half the group set off to find the lion's den while the others went to escort any remaining Arbormer to the safety of the canopy. Upon arriving at Takavor's den, the away team discovered a bizarre clown-like creature there. After fighting and killing the monster, they had freed Takavor from its curse as the lion arrived to his den having regained his sense. With their task done, the group returned to Prime with a report on what happened.

Hearing of this clown, the ancient tree showed concern that it meant the return of the Chaos Twins' minions, which the party believed was part of Maximus's machinations. After giving Prime a warning for what was to come, they set out to return to Aniagert and confront the perilous priest.

Maximum Overdrive

After all that they had learned from their adventures in Dwemdrop and Mechbios, the group felt it was time to confront Maximus himself. They had noticed that things within the Seren District were oddly quiet. Upon further inspection it was discovered that the area had been emptied, leaving the temple as the only occupied structure with Maximus inside. When he was directly confronted by the party he dropped the pretense of being a kindly old priest and assumed his more malicious personality as Maximum Johnson, the mad mage of Yanille. Maximus then revealed the Nexus, the source of his newfound divinity and revealed his intention to turn Avalon into a private theatre worthy of Sliske, who he claimed was the Tragedian.

The revelation proved to be unamusing and boring for the Patron, who expressed little interest in getting involved further with this and teleport away. Shocked at the revelation that the Patron had taken over Alevian's body, the party decided to focus on Maximus for the time being. Their attacks, however, proved futile as all they did was healed by Maximus's divine health. Seeing no other option than to try attacking the source of it, they focused their attacks on the Nexus. This proved to be difficult as the device seemed to be fortified by the flow of godly power, so Olni took it upon herself to destroy it with the full power of Mjolnir. The resulting blast destroyed the Nexus, cutting Maximus off from his source of strength, at the cost of Olni's life. With sadness and rage in their hearts, the party attacked Maximus.

The battle was difficult, with Maximus summoning numerous clowns to serve and heal him. Things seemed dire until the timely arrival of the party's allies, who distracted one of the larger clowns. With renewed efforts the party was able to finally kill Maximus, who telepathically conveyed his dying vision of the party failing to stop the Patron.

With things settled, Dagda and the others allowed the group time to mourn Olni. This reverie was shortly interrupted by the arrival of Hugh Darrow and his master: The Polytheist. The Polytheist expressed their condolences to the group and offered to transport Olni's body to Ardougne for an escort to Relleka, as well as teleporting the remaining members back to Ardougne. They accepted and upon reaching Ardougne sought out immediate medical care before returning to their home to rest.

Shadows Unveiled: Caverns of Deceit

As they emerged from the perilous encounter with the desert strykewyrm, they reached the cavern entrance, only to be met with a grim scene of blood stains and lifeless bodies strewn across the ground. Initially thinking it was a stroke of luck due to the predominance of Chaos Dwarves, the group soon discovered Imcando dwarves intermingled with their adversaries in the cavern's depths, alongside chaos dwarves and druids.

Venturing deeper into the labyrinthine caves, they stumbled upon chaos druids and dwarves, engaged in conversation with Hatch, the Red Axe leader. Attempting to approach unnoticed, their efforts were thwarted as magical sensors detected their presence, triggering a fierce confrontation between the Bane-Bringers and Rmot, a blue-robed human in dialogue with Hatch.

In the midst of battle, the group witnessed Rmot's formidable power, realizing that his minions were mere illusions. Eugene's quick thinking prompted him to suspect Rmot as Climdu's father, compelling him to summon Climdu for reinforcement. Despite their valiant efforts, Rmot continued to display overwhelming strength, inflicting injuries and defeating some of the group. Salvation arrived when Climdu joined the fray, turning the tide of the battle in their favor.

Following a brief exchange, Rmot departed, sparing the group. With Climdu's assistance, they stabilized their unconscious comrades—Eugene, HH, and Marwynn. Zaramoth swiftly disposed of one bomb, while Gwyn located and oversaw the removal of the other by the Imcando dwarves. Regrouping, they were teleported to Kingstown to tend to their wounded members.

In a revelation, Climdu asserted that her father orchestrated everything, debunking the notion of a Red Axe revival as a ruse for his hidden agenda. After dropping the group off at a nearby hospital, Climdu resumed her mission. Three hours passed, during which Eugene and HH regained consciousness, learning of the recent events. The somber news continued as Eugene received a message from Rivemay via the sending spell, revealing Olni's demise and the Patron's successful takeover of Alevian.

With the situation settled and the news spreading, the group resolved to rest and swiftly conclude their affairs in Great Kourend, aiming to return to Ardougne as soon as possible.

Upon the unsettling revelation of HH's inability to regenerate wounds, the group convened to strategize on restoring this essential capability. Their destination was Red's Inn, an opulent establishment renowned for its diverse inventory, including rare and common items, and staffed by demons. Engaging in a brief conversation, the workers at Red's Inn divulged that HH was indeed cursed. This curse not only thwarted the magical healing of HH's human side by their demon side but also impeded the closure of wounds at a humanly feasible rate.

The group, shaken by the knowledge that HH, a Snow Imp/Human halfling, was cursed to a gradual demise, harbored a collective anger. Zaramoth, determined to rectify this dire situation, initiated a holy ritual to lift the curse. While the others perused the shop's offerings, Zaramoth, accompanied by Eugene and Marwynn, conducted the ritual. Eugene astutely identified the cursed object as HH's lifelong companion, the mask. HH confirmed this, recalling a time when their wounds would naturally heal.

As the ritual unfolded, Zaramoth successfully removed the curse, prompting HH to destroy the malevolent mask in gratitude. However, a surprising transformation occurred — HH's Snow Imp side emerged, sprouting wings, horns, and gaining the ability to teleport like an imp, amusingly frightening Gwyn in the process. The group, elated by their success in aiding a friend, resolved to pursue the Master, HH's previous companion. Before embarking on their mission, they made a brief detour to an invention store for Marwynn and Eugene to recharge their divine charges. During this stop, Eugene received a court order.

The group learned of Eric Conway's legal pursuit, accusing Eugene of property destruction. Eugene, leveraging the Sending spell, informed Rivemay of delays and sought legal assistance from family contacts. Meanwhile, Gwyn stumbled upon a human bearing the same tattoo as HH, conversing with a sorcerer in a back alley. Overhearing plans for a spell to break a seal and seize control, Gwyn relayed the information upon returning. HH, eager to test their teleportation abilities, inadvertently transported themselves to the Kharidian Desert and back before rejoining the group.

With Gwyn's report, the group unraveled the Master's ominous plan — an attempt to control the Wintertodt, a formidable entity with an enigmatic origin. Realizing the threat posed to Great Kourend, the group resolved to journey to the Northern Tundra to thwart these perilous machinations.
