Yep, that was mentioned in one of the articles I was reading... it said that it required so much power that a battery would have made it too heavy to be practical so they turned to Hydrogen power.
Who's the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about?
I can't help wondering where all the extra electricity needed to charge the cars and, in the future heat every home, is going to come from. Will there be enough green energy to go around?
With the right technology and infrastructure there should be plenty. EVs are way more efficient in terms of energy consumption compared to gas vehicles but obviously things need to continue to advance as adoption of electric vehicles also increases so from both sides, it's going to be a gradual shift over the next decade or two.
There's some absurd facts flying around that I've read here and there (when I have time I'll try and dig some out) with regards to renewable energy etc in how much power we can actually harness but obviously as with everything, you'll always have push back, especially from the very industries these changes are going to impact (fossil fuel industry).
With the ever increasing cost of oil that then increases gas prices at the pump, it's going to push more people over to EVs, especially in the coming years when they become a lot more affordable, better range etc.
I think for EVs to become "mass market" they'll need to have been around long enough to generate a decent "second-hand" (ie pre-owned) market.
A large proportion of drivers can't afford to buy new and at the moment even a pre-owned EV is out of the range of many buyers... including myself. Then there's the issue (already discussed at length in this thread) that I'd have nowhere to charge it.
A less logical consideration is that, as a "petrolhead" I'd miss the sound of the engine.
I know that will be considered ridiculous eventually but it's true.
All may not be lost there though, I heard that some audio manufacturers (Harman-Kardon for one) are working on "engine sound generators"... which is actually kinda fun as you can make your EV sound like a car of your choice.

There's also the problem of mining the minerals to make the batteries and all the mining waste. Contamination of ground water from the mining is also a problem
There's actually a substantial amount of material from the batteries that can be recycled when processed correctly to separate all of the different metals and minerals etc but further advancement is still needed to make this way better.
Battery tech is no doubt going to advance quite a lot in the coming years which will hopefully lead to less waste but as with anything, it's progression.
