I can certainly imagine him getting off on having tantrums if someone on the mission, or commenting on the mission, disagreed with him - just the same as the way he runs Twitter.

Was it ever assumed that they were encrypted? No public social media platform should be trusted to honour privacy. Even with the apparent plans to introduce encryption, anybody with the right contacts and money could gain access. Also, knowing Musk, he'd probably lock such a feature behind a paywall.
