Hey

it is true that climate change happens not just because of CO2. But I have to stress that the chemical industry is necessary. Its products are very useful and there are many things that are only available in stores because of the chemical industry. Most people aren't even aware of this.

As a future chemical engineer I can tell you that biological reactions are an exception within the chemical industry. This is because they are only used when they are necessary. Biological reactions are often rather slow and very expensive and we don't know that much about them compared to chemical reactions.

To be honest I was taught that heterogenious catalysis is used very often. That may be a point in which the OP is wrong. Honestly technically most enviromental problems cause by the chemistry industry can be avoided. But in some countrys in the world, e.g. China there aren't that much laws concerning the enviroment. And that's the problem. In many states that have strict rules there is greatly dealt with enviromental issues within the companys. But at some places on earth where producing is cheap many factories are opening up and they're likely to be aweful regarding climate change.

To sum up: The problem is really the money and not that much the technology. Not even the used one. There are many ways to recycle waste and stop harmful gases from polluting the enviroment.
