Not all of it is just for timber though, a large portion of it is clearing area to make room for larger and larger palm plantations for palm oil, which is a cheap filler used in like everything. In this case, at least they're replanting some plants (palms aren't trees, so it's not technically replanting trees), but it brings up other issues like the fact that the orangutan has nearly become extinct because humans are completely annihilating its habitat in the jungles of Indonesia just to be able to produce palm oil.

Just keeping this thread abreast in memory of a terrific man.

What OP is not with us any more?

Unfortunately Helios left us in early 2011. He was a great person and prolific forum user in the earlier forum days, most people from that time will know how helpful and nice he was - this is his last surviving forum thread (which is a great shame since he had so many).

It's nice to see discussion still occurring.

I guess I meant to ask if he is still alive.
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

Oh.

Tbh I don't follow the deforestation part, because climate change is such a huge topic in terms of all the potential causes.

Idk what palm oil is even used for.

It's hard to know whether or not humans will be able to stop the habit of overconsumption and bad designs that lead to climate issues. It's likely that within most of our lifetimes we will see direct effects coming from sea level rise and changes in agricultue. It's a scary future we all have.

I haven't seen much disagreement on this thread which is interesting. Where I'm from, everyone seems to think Climate Change is a hoax so there's never room to bring some solutions up. :/

I thought climate change wasn't the topic of this thread?

As far as it being a hoax, I think that certain groups overexaggerate for political reasons (one of the very many reason I actually hate politics), similar to pretty much any other social topic, but climate change, honestly, just makes sense. You can't introduce something foreign to an environment and expect the environment to not change.

Tbh I think the remaining hoax people are really just confusing global warming with climate change.

Yes you're absolutely right and totally with you there that politics suck but I won't get into that to keep this thread safe. I'm really afraid of the future though, so I try to share a lot of my opinions on the environment to hopefully get people of my generation worried as well.

Palm oil is used in lipsticks, soaps, detergents, shampoos/conditioners, bread and dough, ice cream, instant noodles, pretty much every kind of snack like granola bars, crackers, etc.

So pretty much it's used in everything, lol
