Just done my morning check on my Gooseberries and was wondering what the holes were in a few leaves and to my shock and horror I found them full of Gooseberry Sawfly. Small tiny catapillers who just eat the leaves till none left.

Sprayed the bushes with warm washing up liquid as it will deal with the little buggers.

At least your not using chemicals. Hopefully the soapy water works.

The soapy water seems to be doing the trick.

I picked off most of the effected leaves and put them in compost bin. Didn't kill any as they might eat green fly or something else effecting my garden.

Spraying 3-4 times a day and doing well.

Not seen many and any I do have fell off the leaves which is a good sign.

I will need to remember next year when the bushs grow much bigger as they will have many many more leaves on them for them to munch on. Now I know they eat the leaves I can catch them sooner.

I did catch a strange looking fly too laying eggs on my rhubarb leaves. Never seen such a strange looking fly. The eggs have gone I got rid of them. Enough eating my rhubarb leaves as it is without them. I do a daily slug hunt lol. They fly into my heighbours garden.

Checked my rhubarb this morning and starting to see yellow leaves.

No idea if thats normal for this time of year as it's been decades since I last grew it and can't remember.

I didn't pick any this year as it's the rhubarbs first year. Can't wait till next year though.

Just ticked off with the rhubarb crowns I got from Amazon. They did nothing and when leaves did show up they vanished in a few days.

I'll replace them in Spring when B&Q have some in stock.

Also gooseberries look sad after the catapiller attack. Not seen any new signs of them after I sprayed them. Seems to have done the job. Can't beat washing up liquid for getting rid of pests.

I have a grape vine that's finally growing since I first planted it 5 years ago lol, just found new growth on the thing after hurricane Ida came through which is hilarious. It took a hurricane to motivate the plant to grow :P Also we just picked a bunch of muscadines so that's fun.

I've ordered a pack of 72 assorted perennial plants from a well known seed company. They will be plug plants which I'll have to grow on. Including postage they have cost me £15 so even if just 2 survive it'll be cheaper than buying 2 bigger pot grown plants. The advert listed 14 types but I won't know exactly what they are until they arrive because, understandably, they say they may have to change what they send. I should be getting lavender, verbena, salvia, geum, achillea and dianthus as well as other plants. :)

The latest update for my plants is that they were delivered to Royal Mail at around 5.35 am this morning. I hope they get delivered today ( we only get parcel deliveries on a Saturday, no letters ) because there's no deliveries at all on a Sunday. Young plants won't do well if they have to wait until Monday. :|
edit to add: according to the Royal Mail website post is still delivered on Saturdays but its been a very long time since we had any letters delivered at the weekend. Maybe it only applies to towns and cities and not rural areas like mine. :|

Its 5pm and I didn't get the plants. I'm worried they'll all be dead by the time they arrive on Monday. Our post rarely arrives before noon and parcels are usually in the afternoon. :( :( If they have died I will demand a refund because I don't trust the delivery system to take too long again.

Don't worry too much. Plants are hardy and can come back pretty well.

Edit: Maybe they might spray the plants with water.

I wouldn't be so worried if they were well grown plants but these are baby ones known as plug plants.
