Going Swimming again in Feb :D should be fun, anyone else been swimming lately?

Happy New Year for you and for all! Hope all goes well & smooth like a dolphin in the big sea of life :)

Yeah, I've been swimming at the coast like usual but using my full body thermal suit at the moment, due to the current extreme conditions... Also adding some extra time to deal with December's Bacchanalia of food & drink... gulp O_o

Always wanted to swim for both recreation and competitively, I've always had great endurance but wished it could be better. I really feel like swimming would have complemented my marathon training nicely and helped with conditioning myself further. sadly growing up in a small town in the North East, there wasn't an adequate sized pool for about 40 minutes, and I wouldn't even touch most of the bodies of water around here, no telling whats in them! I look forward to swimming every year on vacation, wherever I may go. At least I had track and cross country in high school! Running is cool I guess. I am jealous of the fact that some of your schools and gym memberships give you access to a pool.

I've been a runner most of my life but recently started taking up swimming just last year in early 2015.

I always liked swimming as a kid but never really took it serious and just really swam for the pure enjoyment. Now that I do it for both training and leisure, it's so much fun and hard work! When I first took it up, I didn't really realize how keen you had to be on your techniques, especially the breathing pattern, I even finally got the bilateral breathing pattern down just a few months ago too.

But best of luck to you and everyone else in your training endeavors.

If I could do it, I'd add an olympic pool to every gym/school/work center. Swimming is one of the most (if not the most , according to sport medics) complete excercises.

Downside is the cost of infrastructure/maintenance of a well equipped pool and thus, the membership costs usually skyrocket. Can't imagine how much power an olympic-size pool ( 50 x 25 meters - 164 x 82 ft ) needs to mantain an adecuate water temperature... but it must be HELL COSTLY.

That, in my opinion, is actually the key to the whole swimming process. Maybe that's why combining this sport with other disciplines such as Yoga, meditation (Zen) and Tai chi, is a good idea :)

If you can spare some time throughout the seven days, I strongly suggest distributing that 1-2 hours in small packs of 20 minutes (3-6 sessions) and either "advance" to 40 min max (2-3 alterned sessions e.g. Tue-Thu or Mon-Wed-Fri) or stick with the 20 min format.

This will increase your stamina to a good level ;) anyway, i'm talking from self-experience: if you can get advice from a swimming instructor/sport medic, it'll be better of course.

If I could afford to go swimming once or twice a week for excersice I certainly would, same with the gym. Many years ago I went to the gym and it was so actictive and I loved it, I use to walked down (Ng)auranga Gorge, do approx 40 min work out, then work back up - those were the days :D

I haven't done yoga in forever, it's definitely a good workout plus a good stretch in itself or two!

On top of this, I even took a class a few months back to see what all I could improve on and another difficult thing I've learned about swimming is really trying to get my shoulders out of the water! It's tough but it's always so much fun trying a new challenge.

Plus, my favorite training method is and not sure if anyone else likes doing this but what I call breathing training in which I try to get down to the end of the pool (25m short ways) without coming up for air. Sometimes I can do it, sometimes I can't but if you do be careful doing that because I've almost passed out a time or two before :P
