People seem to be throwing speculation around as to how many there will be without having seen the announcement stream or reading anything about it, other than the fact it's going to be released...
If you head over to the RuneScape Twitch channel and watch their latest video, skip to 55:30 and Mod Osborne says something along the following lines, referring to bad luck mitigation and obtaining the shards:
"We have mitigation. There is an upper cap - you will be guaranteed to get [a shard] after a certain period of time. There is certainly strong mitigation in there. You might be lucky enough to get [a shard] within the first hour, but if you move beyond that it is definitely ramping up exponentially so you're more likely to get [a shard]. Please don't think you're going to be hunting around for tens of hours on an individual category - that won't be happening."
The shards are going to be available for 42 days. There is a limit after training a certain skill etc that you will 100% get a shard.
3 shards are eseentially given away for free or naturally (getting to Yak Track level 15 means training skills, which means a chance at the shard) whilst attempting to get the other shards:
- Talk to the Wise Old Man who is waiting for you outside the Grand Exchange in Varrock.
- At Level 15 of the free track in the Christmas Yak Track event.
- One shard can be purchased with 30 million in-game gold.
I'll be unlocking the hat on my main and alt account. My friend said he's getting it on all 6 of his accounts. Everyone I know is going to be unlocking the hat.
This will be the most available discontinued item we've ever seen.
Edit: there doesn't seem to be any kind of bot mitigation either, a brand new level 3 account can get it within 42 days using the current options, so...
