While they may not be desirable by wealthy market movers, they are desired by people whom cannot otherwise afford the high end rares. They were trading nearly almost as the daily volume for mask/Santas before they got taken off.

Whilst it is very possible for 50 people to make 2 accounts per day during the duration of the event totalling almost 100 accounts each, we'll change the numbers around. Let's say 1,000 people made 5 accounts. We still reach the same volume of 5k hats between those players.

The event ran for 43 days, and you could quite easily get all shards on one account in a day. If you played multiple accounts, you could get more than one hat a day. On 3rd Jan 2022, they were still 586m so it was very desirable to make multiple accounts during the event.

I could personally run 5 accounts at once. If I'd farmed hats all day, every day, for those 43 days, I'd personally end up with 215 hats myself.

Back to the original estimate of 10k - 20k hats... try work it out any other way except using the traded volume graph, and you'll soon realise there has to be many many more than 20k in the game.

On average, we can assume that everyone gained more than 1 because almost everyone nowadays has multiple accounts - and it was so easy & afk to create 500m per account per day, everyone was creating new accounts to do it.

We'd only need 10k people to create 2 accounts each for there to be 20k in the game... and then there were thousands of other players doing the event too.

The arbitrary trade volume comparison of golden phats/masks/santas proves furthermore that this cannot be used estimate how many of each item there is in the game. It's simply showing how many are traded each day.
