Again, Jagex never said anything about how the new retro cosmetics will look. Look at the new T92 "whip" please. They hardly look like the ugly retro whip. Then look at the retro characters like Zuk. Does the RS3 Zuk look like the ugly Zuk in OSRS? Actually, OSRS (especially Runelite) is trying to make their pixels look like RS3 now, not the other way around.

As I said, if they're retro-themed, I won't have a problem with them. I'm only asking that Jagex touch up existing retro overrides and make sure any future retro overrides are only retro-themed rather than just a direct plop of old models back into the game.

I've been noticing some changes in some of the old cosmetics I have in my customization options. Some look better than they used to in terms of lighting and texture. I'd expect some similar changes to apply to the new retro skins as well.

I certainly hope so but I don't just want retouched lighting/texture maps. I am firmly against any retro override that is just a direct port of the old model back into the game. Retro-themed overrides that are inspired by the old ones are fine, as they fit in with the modern art style, but existing retro overrides are complete eyesores and super inconsistent with the current art style/graphics engine.

OP isnt the only one thinking the same, as proved by this threads existence alone, and because it is ultimately a true ''problem''-whether the design is retro or not it must blend better in the game, much like 3rd age melee, a set that wasnt graphically upgraded but its texture fit the current game. Its even more entertaining when you call your opinion, of many disagreeing with the said statement, a fact.

Consistency is all I care about here; the retro-themed Yak rewards prove they can have retro-themed overrides that are retooled a bit to fit the modern graphics.

Yes and in order for them to be "consistent" considering these arent anything like the Yak rewards and more like the bandos and rune mentioned before, they'll have to look like those.

Then it's fundamentally bad game design.

In your opinion it might be but others clearly beg to differ.

Plus if you really do care about "consistency" then you should be happy about this as they are keeping things that way.

So the main question here is what do you care about more, emersion or consistency?

I mean you did say earlier that these do break you emersion yet now you're saying you care about consistency.

Seems to be 2 conflicting sides.

Actually, no, there are some objective facts in what constitutes good and bad game design. Inconsistent art and graphics only to satisfy nostalgia is, objectively, bad game design.

Consistency has nothing to do with keeping things the same. It means that the art and graphics look appropriate next to each other. It means that you could take any random asset and place it next to another random asset and it'd be immediately believable that they come from the exact same game.

Since 2012 or so, RS has adapted beyond the medieval fantasy approach and gone toward a more high fantasy art style. What's more is that it also has a modern graphical approach, with modern texture techniques and graphical technology. As such, throwing old models back into the game is just objectively a bad idea, period.

As I have said and reiterated a thousand times, there's nothing wrong with having retro-THEMED overrides but they need to be INSPIRED by the retro designs, remade in the modern graphics engine with elements that tie it into the current art style. Again, take some of the Yak rewards for an example. The wizard-themed overrides have the retro vibe, they're inspired by the old style, but they LOOK appropriate for the game because they weren't just a direct port of the old model into the modern game. Another one would be the retro-themed ones like the Lumbridge/Varrock overrides: again, clearly inspired by another era of the game but remade so that they don't look inconsistent with the modern game.

That, THAT is what I'm okay with and THAT is what classifies as good game design. However, lazily plopping an old model into the modern game to satiate nostalgia is objectively AND fundamentally bad game design. Opinion has nothing to do with it.

Uhh last i checked the literal definition of consistent is something being done the same way over and over.

Thus i beg to differ on that front.

So just because you want them to be a certain way doesnt mean they should.

Im sure you'll live even if they come out looking like the rune/bandos just like you have been doing just fine with the current rune/bandos.

That's *A* definition, not the one that applies to game design (or art, for that matter). Consistency is also about making sure things line up. You're intentionally misunderstanding it so you can disagree with me.

Frankly, I'm getting a little annoyed by your antagonism to ANY criticism of Jagex or the way things are being run. It's getting very old.

Yes and in order for this to "line up" considering these are armors and weapons ppl liked the old graphics of, it would only make sense for them to have the old graphics.

Plus im not against giving jagex flak when its needed but i dont see this as a time to give them any bad feedback.

You dont like how the old armor looks in the current style of the game but loads of others dont seem to mind.

Thus ill defend how i feel about this just like you seem to be defending how you feel.

There's no need to shut down people's grievances or be antagonistic when disagreeing with them. I can understand some annoyance with graphical inconsistency with how some places and models I'd like to see graphically updated seem like they may never be, at times over how much fuss people used to make about keeping everything the same and resisting every little change to the game's appearance.

At the same time, I don't agree that retro skins shouldn't be available for players who want to use them. There are plenty of cosmetic outfits I find look terrible or unpleasant to my personal tastes as well as some I like both among the old and new looks. Even the nice ones can be combined into some truly atrocious outfits if you really set your mind to it. New cosmetics don't even necessarily fit into the setting since we got some joke/pun cosmetics like gators and the book of faces.
