I agree on a few levels, just not for your reasons.
I'm in line with Raphella. Better to update the loads of old stuff that really needs it rather than going backwards.

Flipside:
- these are COSMETIC items. So they aren't really hurting anything or doing anything that is OP
- most of the suggested items in the poll were single items (ie: Helm of Netiz), though there were a few sets. so long as it isn't the retro range armor + 4 other sets of things needing to add in 100 models to update ... I'm ok with it
- I agree we shouldn't be OSRS in terms of graphics, but ... a lot of players did play in the pre-EOC days before these were updated
- just because Jagex graphically updated something, doesn't always make it the right call
I'd prefer it if they stopped updating cows and chickens for the Nth time.
Similarly, we've seen changes to skillcape appearances that were just ... No ...

You know very well what I'm saying. This game has always had a story-driven focus as well as a great sense of world building. Throwing in outdated character models because people want a nostalgia fix is just bad game design, especially when an alternate game exists primarily for nostalgia-driven players.

Also Dilbert, I appreciate your discussion here. We've had our differences but I think we can at least mostly agree with this topic.

Draco, as I said, I'm not against retro-THEMED overrides. I'm just against overrides that literally take the old model with the old textures and throw it into the modern game. It doesn't look good and only satisfies the people who refuse to accept change. Some of the old models have cool designs but they need to be touched up to be consistent with the modern game's graphics and overall art style.

I've been playing RS since 2004 (though not specifically on this account) and I like my nostalgia trips as much as anybody but OSRS exists for that reason. I'd rather jump over there when I feel nostalgic and keep the modern game, well, modern.

There's no doubt that some of the graphics changes are pretty meh, such as how Jagex has begun to do what everyone else does and rely only on texture mapping for detail. The result is blurry, cartoonish textures that just feel a bit lazy. I still think that the ground textures from RSHD are better than most modern ground textures; if Jagex added texture maps to those textures, they'd be flawless. But I digress.

The point I'm making isn't whether the new graphics are good or not. Rather, I'm saying that popping very clearly outdated models and textures back into the game to satisfy a never-ending nostalgia craving is a bad, bad idea. It makes that graphical difference between old and new look that much worse which doesn't look good for new players or people who like consistent art.

RS3 graphics simply isn't the same as OSRS. RS3 has over 9000 customization combination. It is up to individual players to make the same "retro item" in RS3 looks much much better than OSRS, or the other way around if they choose min graphics setting.

Once again, thats what ppl want so just because you're against something doesnt mean it shouldnt happen.

Im against quests so does that mean they should stop making more quests?

Nope. I just choose not to do them and ignore them.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. They are objectively inconsistent with the game's current art style and thus that would objectively be poor game design.

Who said they are "objectively inconsistent with the game's current art style"? I believe they will be very consistent with the game's current art style. Remember, it is only up to individual players to customize the game and each may see different things.

So in OSRS we have different graphics and art styles in the official and Runelite clients. Aren't they poor design?

I'm referring to when Jagex just throws the old models into the game. I think they did a good job with the retro-themed content in recent Yak Tracks and that's what I'm hoping they go for if they do this. I'm not at all against that, I'm just against them lazily slapping the old models back into the game only for nostalgia because that is fundamentally inconsistent with the current art style and graphics.

Again, Jagex never said anything about how the new retro cosmetics will look. Look at the new T92 "whip" please. They hardly look like the ugly retro whip. Then look at the retro characters like Zuk. Does the RS3 Zuk look like the ugly Zuk in OSRS? Actually, OSRS (especially Runelite) is trying to make their pixels look like RS3 now, not the other way around.
